Position Details

Transportation and Infrastructure - Government of Newfoundland and Labrador The Building Security Control Technician (BSCT) provides protective services to provincially owned or leased buildings and property; monitors building systems and provides emergency medical assistance as required. Key activities include monitor building systems such as fire and security systems through the use of various computer terminals and related equipment

- Patrol buildings and protect provincial property or infrastructure, equipment and material from hazards such as threats, trespass, theft, fire and accidental or willful damage
- Provide frontline security for buildings and control access of employees, visitors and contractors
- Investigate suspicious persons or activity and take appropriate action as required
- Perform preliminary investigations into thefts, vandalism, disturbances, intrusion and fire alarms
- Perform visual inspections of mechanical and electrical rooms
- Prepare shift logs and write reports
- Perform traffic control including enforcing Transportation and Infrastructure's parking regulations/issuing parking tickets
- Attend court as required
- Provide assistance and emergency medical aid as required at Advanced Medical First Responder Level I
- Monitor the Control Desks as required; other duties as assigned.

Screening Criteria

1. Completion of high school supplemented by a recognized, post-secondary Law Enforcement/Security Administration diploma. Equivalencies will be considered.
2. Possession of a valid Advanced Medical First Responder Level I Certificate.
3. Experience in security work at a large public facility.
4. Experience with computer monitoring of building operation systems.

1. Knowledge of security and safety protocols and procedures including traffic control.
2.



Knowledge of computer monitoring of building operation systems.
3. Ability to effectively exchange information.
4. Ability to formulate and complete incident, accident and shift reports (writing and/or electronic).
5. Ability to solve problems and make independent decisions with sound judgment, sometimes in confrontational and stressful circumstances, with minimal supervision.
6. Ability to assess and evaluate multiple issues and balance competing demands in a dynamic environment.

Conditions of Offer

1. Valid Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Class 05 license.
2. Current driver’s abstract satisfactory to the Employer.
3. Valid Advanced Medical First Responder Level I Certificate.

Conditions of Acceptance

1. Successful applicants will participate in a rotating 24/7 coverage shift schedule, including weekends and holidays.
2. This position requires considerable standing, walking and physical exertion during shifts while making rounds, enforcing parking regulations, snow removal, etc.
3. Required to drive from site to site during night patrols, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
4. Work is performed both inside and outside the site, sometimes in adverse weather conditions
5. Required to wear uniform and/or safety equipment such as safety boots, hard hat, safety vests, safety glasses and personal protection measures when required.
