About the Company
Outsyders are redefining the art of theatrical 3D conversion. Founded by pioneers from three of the most respected stereoscopic conversion studios, our team fuses decades of experience with cutting-edge machine learning to push the boundaries of cinematic immersion. Our innovations are trusted by the biggest names in Hollywood. We don't just convert films; we elevate them, delivering a premium 3D experience that enhances storytelling, deepens engagement, and sets a new industry standard.
About the Role
We are seeking a skilled Clean Plate / Prep Artist with hands-on experience in Nuke, Silhouette, and Mocha to join our team. This role is responsible for building the clean plates, paint work, and occlusion fill that our stereo conversion and VFX pipelines are built on. These plates must hold up under grade, and comp.
We are looking for artists who lead with creative judgment, work at pace, and use the best available tooling, including approved ML-assisted workflows, to amplify what they can deliver. This is a fully remote position open to candidates based in Canada. All work is performed on colour-managed virtual machines hosted by Outsyders, so no local installs or asset wrangling are required.
Training will be provided on our proprietary tools and methods. This is a full time position offered on a fixed-term basis for an initial 3-month period. There may be an opportunity to extend the term, depending on business needs and the candidate's performance and fit with the team.
Responsibilities
Clean Plate Creation & Paint:
- Build clean plates and clean plate sequences: rig and wire removal, tracking marker removal, crew and equipment paint-outs, signage clearance, and continuity fixes.
- Generate occlusion fill and missing-area reconstruction for stereo conversion, where content behind a separated layer must be invented convincingly.
- Select the appropriate method per shot, whether temporal median, frame borrows, tracked patches, planar patches, 2D/2.5D projections, or hand paint, and know when the cheaper approach won't hold.
Patch Tracking & Stabilization:
- Use Mocha planar tracking to hold paint work across camera movement.
- Match grain, motion blur, defocus, lens distortion, and colour so patches survive a grade.
- Cut supporting mattes and holdouts as required by the shot.
Tools & Innovation:
- Apply ML-assisted tools such as generative fill and inpainting, ML-based object removal, depth and optical flow estimation, and segmentation-assisted paint where they deliver quality and speed, and recognise where they do not.
- Build and reuse efficient setups to reduce repetitive manual work.
Pipeline & ShotGrid:
- Manage tasks, versions, publishes, and notes in ShotGrid, keeping status current and accurate.
- Deliver plates to comp and downstream departments in a state they can build on immediately, with the approach documented clearly enough for another artist to pick up.
- Review plates before starting and flag issues such as missing clean plate photography, unusable frame ranges, or shots that need to return upstream, rather than concealing a problem.
Quality Control:
- QC your own work at full resolution, on cycle, checking integration under movement rather than on a single frame.
- Address supervisor and client notes accurately and within turnaround.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with roto, depth, comp, and production teams to understand what each recipient of your work needs from it.
- Contribute to a pipeline culture where every step is handed over complete, so the next artist can be proud of what they add.
Qualifications
Required:
- Demonstrable professional prep, paint, or clean plate experience on episodic, feature, commercial, or stereo conversion work.
- Strong Nuke skills: rotopaint, tracking and stabilization, transform and warp tools, time offsets, grain matching, projection setups, and comfort working inside existing scripts.
- Hands-on experience with Mocha for planar tracking and patch work.
- Hands-on paint experience in Silhouette.
- Experience with ShotGrid (Flow Production Tracking), including tasks, versions, playlists, notes, and published files.
- A strong eye for integration, with the ability to identify when a patch is close but not finished.
- Solid understanding of how a VFX pipeline fits together and of downstream department requirements.
- Clear written communication and reliable self-management in a remote environment.
Preferred:
- Experience with ML-assisted tools inside DCC packages.
- Python or scripting for repeatable setups, gizmos, and tools.
- Camera tracking, matchmove, or 3D projection experience.
- Photogrammetry, texture projection, or set survey familiarity.
- Stereoscopic experience.
- Rotoscope crossover skills.
- Ability to create clear documentation and support other artists in adopting new tools.
Pay range and compensation package The expected salary range for this role is $30–$40 CAD hourly, depending on experience, technical skill level, and overall alignment with the role.
