About McMaster University

McMaster University is where bold ideas become real-world impact. Guided by our new strategic plan, Bolder Together , we're building on our strengths in research, education, and community while continuing to evolve as a leading research-intensive university.

Ranked among the world's leading universities, McMaster is known for research that improves lives, teaching that puts learners first, and a collaborative approach to tackling complex challenges. With more than 37,000 students, 8,000 faculty and staff, and a globally recognized research enterprise, McMaster has a long history of challenging convention, from pioneering problem-based learning to advances in evidence-based medicine.

For communicators, that means there is no shortage of stories to tell, from groundbreaking discoveries and student achievements to the people and partnerships that help move the University forward.

About McMaster Communications

McMaster is home to exceptional people doing meaningful work. McMaster Communications helps tell those stories.

Bringing together Strategic Communications, Brand & Marketing, and Government Relations, our team works with partners across the University to communicate institutional priorities, celebrate achievements, and showcase the research, people, and ideas that define McMaster. Through thoughtful, strategic communications, we strengthen the University's reputation and build meaningful connections with our communities and partners.

About the Role

As Communications Coordinator, you'll help bring McMaster's stories to life across social media, the web, publications, and other channels. You'll work within the Strategic Communications team, reporting to the Social Media Lead,

creating content for everything from Instagram Reels and LinkedIn posts to web features and newsletters.

No two days look quite the same. You might spend part of your day creating content, covering a campus event, or supporting a multimedia project, and another planning social media, updating web content, or collaborating with colleagues across the University.

This role suits someone creative, organized, and endlessly curious. Someone who's tuned in to what makes content resonate, likes experimenting with current formats, and cares as much about accuracy and accessibility as they do about a good idea.

Experience with short-form video, mobile photography, interviewing, WordPress, or social content creation will all serve you well here.

What You'll Do

- Help plan, create, and publish content for McMaster's central social channels.
- Write, edit, and adapt content for social media, web, publications, and other platforms. Keeping it accurate, accessible, and true to McMaster's brand.
- Work across formats: social posts, web copy, photography, short-form video.
- Spot good stories from across the University community and shape them into content people want to engage with.
- Support interviews, photo shoots, video production, and other multimedia projects.
- Publish across platforms, track engagement, and put together basic performance reports.
- Help manage our community presence: monitoring comments and messages, responding where it makes sense, and flagging anything that needs escalating.
- Keep our website current in WordPress, and support the prep and send of e-newsletters.
- Help run editorial calendars so projects stay on track.
- Keep our photo and video library organized so the team can always find what they need.
- Stay on top of social trends, platform changes, and what's working in digital storytelling.
- Team up with colleagues across the University on communications projects big and small.
- Pitch in wherever else is needed.

What You Bring

- Experience creating content for Instagram, LinkedIn, and similar platforms.
- A track record producing short-form video, mobile photography, or visual storytelling.
- Comfort with tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.
- Some time spent working in a website CMS, ideally WordPress.
- Strong writing and editing skills, with a knack for shifting tone depending on the audience and platform.
- A good handle on social trends, platform best practices, and what drives engagement.
- An understanding of digital accessibility and inclusive content practices.
- Solid organizational skills and the ability to juggle more than one priority at a time.
- An eye for detail and pride in doing things well.
- The ability to work independently, but just as comfortable pitching in as part of a team.
- Curiosity, initiative, and an appetite for learning new tools as they come along.

Nice to have: experience interviewing people or producing story-driven video; familiarity with email marketing platforms or digital asset management systems; communications experience in a post-secondary, public sector, or similarly complex organization. Pay Transparency Statement The posted hiring range represents McMaster's typical hiring range for this position. Actual starting salary will depend on factors such as relevant experience, qualifications, internal equity, and market conditions.

Individuals with extensive experience, deep specialized expertise, and/or those who can demonstrate exceptional past performance, as applicable, may be hired at a higher rate within the full range, in accordance with the University compensation policies.

Hybrid Work Language To ensure an ongoing and vibrant University community that meets the needs of our students, staff and faculty and supports the University mission, ability to work on-site continues to be a requirement for most University positions. The University is supportive of exploring flexible work arrangements that effectively balance operational needs and employee interests.
