About Gatsby’s

Gatsby’s is a nationally recognized, high-end tasting-menu restaurant ranked No. 74 on Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants list. Our dining experience is built around exceptional hospitality, detailed service, creative cuisine, and a thoughtful beverage program. We are seeking a warm, polished, and highly organized Host to join our front-of-house team. Hosting and guest relations are the primary focus of this position, with bartending and dining-room support as secondary responsibilities.

Position Summary

The Host is the first and final point of contact for our guests and plays an essential role in setting the tone for their experience. The successful candidate will manage reservations, welcome and seat guests, coordinate the flow of service, and maintain clear communication between the dining room, bar, kitchen, and management team. This role is well suited to someone who takes pride in hospitality, works well as part of a team, and wants to develop their knowledge of fine dining, wine, cocktails, and professional restaurant service.

Primary Responsibilities

- Welcome guests warmly and professionally, using their names whenever possible.
- Manage reservations, confirmations, cancellations, waitlists, and guest inquiries.
- Review each service for allergies, dietary restrictions, celebrations, VIPs, and special requests.
- Coordinate arrivals and seating with management and the service team.
- Escort guests to their tables and assist with coats and personal belongings.
- Maintain accurate guest profiles, preferences, and visit notes.
- Communicate delays or changes with confidence and discretion.
- Assist with transportation, directions, and other reasonable guest requests.
- Thank departing guests and ensure a thoughtful final impression.

- Maintain a clean, organized, and polished entrance, reception area, and host stand.
- Monitor the dining room and communicate guest needs or concerns to the appropriate team member.

Bartending and Service Support

Bartending is a secondary part of this position. Training may be provided based on the candidate’s experience and interest.

Responsibilities may include

- Preparing and serving cocktails, wine, beer, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages.
- Following established recipes, presentation standards, and responsible alcohol-service requirements.
- Assisting with bar mise en place, restocking, glassware, garnishes, and cleaning.
- Developing a working knowledge of Gatsby’s beverage program.
- Supporting water and beverage service when necessary.
- Clearing and resetting tables during busy periods.
- Polishing glassware and cutlery.
- Assisting servers and bartenders with mise en place and closing duties.
- Helping wherever needed to maintain a smooth and professional service.

Teamwork Expectations

Exceptional hospitality is created through collaboration. The successful candidate will:

- Support colleagues without always waiting to be asked.
- Communicate respectfully with all departments.
- Remain calm, positive, and solutions-focused during busy services.
- Take responsibility for assigned duties and follow through on commitments.
- Be willing to assist outside the host role when the team or guest experience requires it.
- Accept feedback professionally and apply coaching consistently.

- Contribute to a respectful, inclusive, and accountable workplace.

Qualifications

- Previous hosting, guest-relations, fine-dining, luxury-hospitality, or restaurant experience is preferred.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- A skilled presence with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while remaining composed and welcoming.
- Interest in food, wine, cocktails, and high-level hospitality.
- Bartending or beverage knowledge is an asset but not required.
- Experience with reservation and point-of-sale systems is an asset.
- Valid provincial responsible beverage-service certification, or willingness to obtain it.
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.

Professional Development

Gatsby’s supports team members who are motivated to grow within the hospitality industry. This position provides opportunities to:

- Learn fine-dining and tasting-menu service.
- Develop wine, spirits, cocktail, and beverage knowledge.
- Participate in menu briefings, tastings, and service training.
- Cross-train in bartending, serving, and other front-of-house roles.
- Take on greater responsibilities as skills and confidence develop.
- Pursue advancement within the service, beverage, or management teams.

Advancement is based on professionalism, initiative, teamwork, performance, and the consistent delivery of Gatsby’s service standards.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is welcoming, organized, attentive, and team focused. They are confident taking ownership of the host stand, willing to assist behind the bar or in the dining room when necessary, and motivated to build a career within a nationally recognized restaurant. To apply, please submit a résumé and a brief introduction outlining your hospitality experience and professional goals.
