About the Role:
Summary
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Finance is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team responsible for strategic and operational leadership of Maplewood Care Society's finance and accounting functions, with additional oversight of corporate information management and technology, privacy, human resources administration and corporate risk processes.
This role provides financial stewardship and strategic planning support to ensure the effective, efficient and compliant management of organizational resources. The incumbent acts as a senior advisor to the CEO, Board of Directors and Finance and Audit Committee and leads core corporate systems that support organizational sustainability, accountability and performance.
This position requires a hands-on, collaborative and communication-focused leadership style, strong analytical and financial skills, and a commitment to a positive, secure work environment aligned with MCS's Vision, Mission and Values.
About You
Education and Experience
- CPA designation required.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related discipline.
- Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible accounting and financial-management experience, including leadership of financial reporting, budgeting, audit and internal controls.
- Experience in a not-for-profit, healthcare, residential care or other regulated environment is preferred.
- Experience with Board and committee reporting, financial systems implementation, and government or funder reporting is preferred.
- Knowledge of Canadian and not-for-profit accounting standards is required.
- Experience supervising and developing finance staff is required; experience overseeing corporate IT, privacy, human resources administration or corporate risk processes is an asset.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong financial acumen, analytical abilities and strategic judgement.
- Understanding of information technology systems and advanced proficiency with accounting software, payroll platforms and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.

What You’ll Do Senior Leadership & Strategic Planning
- Participates as a member of the Senior Leadership Team to address organization-wide issues, strategic initiatives, long-term planning, and continuous quality improvement.
- Provides expert analysis of trends, indicators and performance metrics regarding finance, sick time, overtime, OHS/Worksafe rates, and other information as needed and provides advice to the CEO and Board committees on strategies to achieve optimal results.
- Leads the development and evaluation of annual operating plans and budgets and contributes to long-range organizational planning.
- Acts as staff lead for the Finance and Audit Committee.
Financial Management
- Oversees all accounting and financial management functions, including the development and monitoring of policies, procedures, internal controls,
approval protocols, purchasing and benefits-related financial controls, budgeting systems, forecasting tools and corporate financial standards.
- Establishes and monitors appropriate segregation of duties, delegated authorities, approval limits and compensating controls within the finance function.
- Reviews and approves significant reconciliations, journal entries, accounting estimates, financial statements and regulatory submissions prepared by the Assistant Controller and finance team.
- Establishes finance team roles, workflows, deadlines, cross-training and business-continuity processes to ensure timely completion of payroll, reporting, payments, billing and statutory obligations.
- Develops multi-year financial forecasts and scenario analyses to support organizational planning, sustainability and major decisions.
- Leads the development of annual operating and capital budgets in collaboration with the CEO and leadership team, establishes budget assumptions and processes, reviews departmental submissions, and recommends final budgets for approval.
- Oversees and approves accurate monthly, quarterly and year-end financial statements, variance analyses and financial reports prepared by the finance team, and presents financial results to the CEO, Senior Leadership Team, Finance and Audit Committee and Board of Directors.
- Directs cash flow planning, treasury operations and routine banking activities, including bank balance management, transfers, liquidity planning and banking relationships, within delegated authority.
- Provides overall direction and oversight for day-to-day accounting, accounts payable and receivable, payroll accounting, cash management, banking, investment administration and revenue processes, ensuring appropriate segregation of duties, review and approval controls.
- Provides strategic and functional leadership for accounting and payroll systems, including system governance, access controls, process design, implementation of major changes and continuous improvement.
- Serves as the primary liaison with external auditors, establishes audit plans and timelines, oversees preparation of working papers and audited financial statements, resolves significant audit issues, and reports audit results and recommendations to the CEO and Finance and Audit Committee.
- Develops and maintains effective relationships with banks, investment providers, lenders and other financial institutions.
- Ensures the accuracy, completeness and timely submission of financial, tax, funder and regulatory reporting, reviews significant submissions, and addresses material compliance or reporting issues.
- Provides financial oversight of contracts, leases, grants and other financial commitments within assigned portfolios.
- Develops investment and borrowing recommendations for review and approval by the Chief Executive Officer and implements approved decisions in accordance with organizational policy and delegated signing authorities.
- Reviews accounting policies annually and determines or approves significant accounting treatments, estimates and disclosures to ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and funder or regulatory requirements.
Risk Management
- Leads financial and corporate risk-management processes and supports the CEO and Senior Leadership Team in identifying, documenting,
monitoring and reporting significant organizational risks.
Human Resources Leadership
- Provides administrative oversight and coordination of organizational human resources processes, including recruitment documentation, onboarding, employment changes, terminations, benefits administration and maintenance of employment records.
- Supports the CEO and operational leaders with established human resources processes and coordinates access to external human resources or legal expertise as required.
- Ensures human resources administration is carried out in accordance with employment legislation, collective agreements, organizational policies and established approval authorities.
- Supervises, evaluates, develops and, when necessary, terminates direct reports; promotes a healthy, respectful, inclusive work environment.
Information Management, Technology & Privacy
- Acts as the designated Privacy Officer and leads organizational privacy compliance, including policies, education, access and disclosure processes, privacy impact assessments, incident response and compliance with applicable privacy legislation.
- Coordinates selection and implementation of corporate hardware and software and supports secure, reliable and effective operation of organizational systems.
- Oversees information management and technology contractors and monitors service performance, security, continuity and contractual deliverables.
Special Projects and Contracted Services
- Provides oversight for designated grants, projects and community initiatives.
- Ensures appropriate financial accountability, reporting, milestone monitoring and compliance with funding or contractual requirements.
- Coordinates with staff, consultants and external participants to support achievement of project goals and milestones.
- Maintains effective relationships with community and project partners as required.
- Oversees designated financial and administrative services provided to Maplewood Care Foundation under an approved services agreement, ensuring appropriate documentation, controls, reporting and separation between the organizations.
Other Responsibilities
- Supports the CEO with specialized reports, compliance requirements, analysis and strategic initiatives.
- Participates in local or regional initiatives relevant to the sector and incorporates best practices into MCS operations.
- Performs other related duties within the scope and level of the position.
Working Setting
- Office-based role requiring extended periods of computer use and participation in meetings.
- Regular interaction with staff, leaders, Board members, external advisors and service providers.
- Flexibility is required for occasional early mornings, evenings, weekends, urgent matters, and community or organizational events.
- Participates in the Manager on Call rotation and must be available to respond to urgent organizational matters outside regular working hours.
- Occasional travel between Maplewood Care Society sites and to external meetings or events may be required.

Pay: $118,000.00-$128,000.00 per year
