Driver Assistant
About the Position:
We are looking for a dependable Driver Assistant to work alongside our drivers during scheduled pickups and deliveries. This is a hands-on position for someone who is comfortable with physical work and understands the importance of careful freight handling, staying organized, and keeping deliveries moving on schedule.
A typical workday may involve preparing freight for departure, helping load the truck, travelling with the assigned driver, unloading at delivery locations, checking items against shipping paperwork, and returning to the yard or warehouse at the completion of the route.
The person in this position will be expected to work cooperatively with the assigned driver while taking responsibility for the loading, handling, and delivery-support tasks assigned to them.
What You Will Do:
- Prepare outgoing goods and freight for scheduled delivery routes.
- Load items onto trucks and unload shipments at customer or designated delivery locations.
- Perform hand-bombing and other manual freight-handling work throughout the shift.
- Move cartons, packaged goods, materials, and other freight between trucks, loading areas, warehouses, and delivery locations.
- Place freight inside the truck in an orderly manner and assist with securing loads before departure.
- Check that items being loaded or unloaded correspond with the applicable shipment or delivery paperwork.
- Watch for damaged packaging, missing items, incorrect quantities, or other shipment concerns and bring them to the driver's attention.
- Accompany the driver on assigned pickup and delivery routes and provide assistance at each scheduled stop.
- Help prepare the vehicle and cargo area before leaving the yard and assist with basic visual vehicle checks when requested.
- Keep delivery documents, shipment information, and other route-related paperwork organized during the workday.
- Obtain or assist with required delivery confirmations and return applicable documents to the appropriate company personnel.
- Help handle returned,
refused, or undelivered goods and ensure they are brought back to the appropriate location.
- Keep the truck cargo area clear of unnecessary materials and maintain an orderly working area during loading and unloading.
- Assist with organizing freight in the yard, warehouse, loading dock, or staging area before departure.
- Guide or spot the driver when additional visibility is required while positioning the vehicle at a loading dock, yard, or delivery site.
- Communicate delivery concerns, damaged freight, access problems, delays, or discrepancies to the driver or appropriate team member.
- Handle customer property and company freight carefully to minimize loss or damage.
- Follow safe lifting techniques and use available carts, dollies, pallet-moving equipment, or other approved handling equipment when trained to do so.
- Wear required personal protective equipment and follow site-specific safety requirements at warehouses, yards, and customer locations.
- Complete other practical duties connected with pickups, deliveries, freight handling, and daily transportation operations.
What We Are Looking For: The successful candidate should be comfortable working in an active environment where priorities may change according to routes, delivery volumes, and customer requirements.
Candidates should have
- The physical ability to repeatedly lift, carry, push, pull, and reposition freight during a shift.
- A dependable attendance record and the ability to report for scheduled shifts on time.
- The ability to work carefully around trucks, loading docks, warehouses, and moving equipment.
- Positive organizational skills when handling multiple shipments or delivery documents.
- The ability to understand and follow workplace instructions and safety procedures.
- Good communication skills for working with drivers, warehouse staff, supervisors, and customers.
- A practical, team-oriented approach to completing daily work.
- The ability to identify obvious shipment damage or discrepancies and report them appropriately.
- Flexibility to work according to scheduled routes, pickup times, delivery requirements, and operational needs.
- Previous experience involving deliveries, warehouses, moving, freight handling, shipping/receiving, or general labour is an asset.
Physical Nature of the Job: This is an active position rather than a desk-based role. The Driver Assistant will regularly be required to lift and carry items, walk between vehicles and delivery locations, bend and reach while handling freight, and spend portions of the workday standing or travelling with the assigned driver.
Candidates must be comfortable performing repetitive physical duties and working with goods of different sizes and weights.
Where the Work Takes Place:
Work is performed across different locations during the day. Depending on the assigned route, this may include the company's yard or warehouse, inside truck cargo areas, loading docks, commercial properties, customer premises, and outdoor loading or delivery areas.
Weather, traffic, delivery volume, and individual customer locations can affect the workday, so the successful candidate must be adaptable and prepared to work safely in changing conditions.
