Description

Shulman & Partners LLP is a high-performing, human-centered family law firm with offices in Toronto and Ottawa, driven by a singular vision: Do Good, Make an Impact. We are a firm with a result-oriented team and a culture based on pro-activity, professional integrity, and the utmost commitment to our clients. We believe good ideas come from challenging each other's thinking. Feedback is part of how we improve, and upholding high standards is how we grow.

Requirements

We are looking for a sharp, agile, hands-on Finance Manager to run our finance function day to day. You will own the details, bring solutions, solve problems, and make sure we have reliable financial information to move fast.

We will ask questions, challenge ideas, and expect thoughtful recommendations, but we do not expect to know finance better than you do.

Your role is to explain your reasoning in plain language and exercise good judgment.

Who This Role Is Right For

- Someone with a strong foundation in finance, 5+ years in, ready to take on more scope and initiative, and possibly their first experience managing people.
- Someone who likes building systems and automating manual work and gets energized by problems that do not have a clean, existing playbook.
- Someone who wants the opportunity to build a finance function that can scale and run efficiently, not just keep the lights on.
- Someone who enjoys figuring things out and can take on a new problem and move quickly toward a plan of action.
- Someone who is comfortable in ambiguity, builds process where none exists, and is naturally curious, understanding the full context to test assumptions rather than settling for the quickest solution.
- Someone who takes feedback well, asks good questions, and cares about getting it right.
- Someone who is humble enough to keep learning, confident enough to make thoughtful decisions,

and practical enough to focus on outcomes rather than appearances.

Who This Role Is Not Right For

- People who want a predictable or repetitive set of tasks with no visibility across the team.
- People looking to be told exactly what to do and who do not enjoy figuring things out.
- People who are only looking to manage a team and not be hands on.
- People who find comfort in following a manual.
- People who do not want to be in the weeds, and who do not like coming back to the drawing board to test new ideas or better ways of operating.
- People who prefer stability over speed, who do not like shifting priorities, and who get flustered under pressure.

Attitudes

We care about you being tightly aligned with how we operate:

- You hold yourself and the people around you to a very high bar; you do not make excuses for yourself or for others.
- You do what it takes. You take ownership without being asked. If something is broken, you propose a fix; if there is an opportunity, you highlight it.
- You stay curious past the first answer. You do not just flag that something is not working, you understand why, and you fix it if you can. You do not tend to say this is not my job.
- You use good judgment and act on it, checking in when the stakes call for it rather than waiting for permission on everything, but you always keep your team informed.
- You are a self-starter who is comfortable being in the details and rolling up your sleeves to get things done. You do not let obstacles stop you from finding a way through.
- You have excellent analytical skills. You love using data to identify problems, discover opportunities, and back up your ideas.

Qualifications

- Experience in finance or accounting, ideally in a professional services setting.
- Comfort with data, systems, and building processes from scratch.
- Legal trust accounting experience or a CPA designation is an asset, but neither replaces judgment, ownership, curiosity, or the ability to learn.
