The Dartmouth Yacht Club (DYC) is seeking an experienced, energetic, and community-minded General Manager to lead the daily operations of one of Atlantic Canada's premier boating organizations.
Located in Wright's Cove on the Bedford Basin, Dartmouth Yacht Club is home to more than 350 members and offers a vibrant marina, boatyard, Junior Sailing Program, racing, cruising, social events, and community partnerships. Reporting to the elected volunteer Management Committee through the Commodore, the General Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, financial management, and strategic execution of Club operations.
This is a dynamic leadership role where no two days are the same.
Key Responsibilities The General Manager provides leadership across all aspects of Club operations, including:
Operations & Leadership
- Lead the day-to-day operations of the Club, Marina, Boatyard and Junior Sail Training Facility (seasonal)
- Recruit, supervise, coach and evaluate staff
- Foster a positive, collaborative workplace culture
- Support the Management Committee by implementing strategic priorities and Board decisions
- Develop policies, procedures and operational best practices
Financial Management
- Prepare and manage annual operating budgets
- Monitor revenues, expenditures and cash flow
- Produce monthly financial reports for the Management Committee
- Work closely with the Office Manager, Treasurer and external Auditor
- Utilize QuickBooks for financial reporting, budgeting and operational oversight
Member & Stakeholder Relations
- Deliver exceptional service to members and guests
- Build strong relationships with volunteers, committees, sponsors, government agencies and community partners
- Respond professionally to member concerns and operational issues
- Represent Dartmouth Yacht Club within the boating community
Junior Sailing
- Oversee the successful operation of the Junior Sailing Program
- Work closely with the Head Instructor and coaching staff
- Support registration, staffing, budgeting, safety and program planning
- Liaise with Sail Nova Scotia, Sail Canada and participating families
Events & Programs
- Oversee the planning and delivery of Club events, regattas and member activities
- Coordinate with staff and volunteers to ensure successful execution
- Support sponsorship initiatives and community engagement opportunities
Project Management & Continuous Improvement
- Lead facility improvement projects and capital initiatives
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and member experience
- Develop and document processes to support long-term organizational success
- Manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting
Health, Safety & Environmental Stewardship
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations
- Promote a strong culture of workplace safety
- Oversee environmental policies and marina best practices
- Coordinate emergency preparedness and risk management activities
Qualifications The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Minimum five years of progressive management experience
- Strong financial management and budgeting experience
- Experience using QuickBooks or similar accounting software
- Proven leadership and people management skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
- Strong project management and organizational skills
- Experience improving operational processes and implementing new systems
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders
- Experience planning or managing events is considered a strong asset
- Experience working with volunteer organizations, boards or not-for-profits is an asset
- Experience in the marine, recreation, hospitality or sport sectors is considered an asset

Requirements
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as operational requirements dictate
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range $90,000 – $110,000 per year, commensurate with experience
