Heavy Equipment Operator – Base Crew

Wood Buffalo Paving is looking for an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator to join our road construction and base crew.

This position will focus on road base construction, excavation, grading, aggregate placement and final preparation ahead of asphalt paving. We are looking for an operator who understands grade, can work independently and is comfortable operating several types of heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

- Operate excavators, graders, dozers and loaders
- Complete rough and finish grading for roads, parking lots and commercial sites
- Place, spread and shape granular base materials
- Establish proper elevations, slopes, crowns and drainage
- Work to survey stakes, elevations and project specifications
- Prepare finished base surfaces for asphalt paving
- Perform excavation, stripping, backfill and site preparation
- Load and stockpile aggregate materials
- Assist with compaction and moisture-conditioning operations
- Complete daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance
- Work closely with the Base Foreman, survey personnel and other operators
- Assist with general construction activities when equipment operation is not required

Experience We Are Looking For Applicants should have strong experience operating several of the following:
- Motor grader
- Excavator
- Dozer
- Wheel loader
- Skid steer
- Compaction equipment

Finish-grading experience is strongly preferred.



The ideal candidate understands how to build a road from subgrade through finished aggregate base and can recognize and correct grade, drainage and compaction issues before paving begins.

Qualifications

- Minimum 3 years of heavy civil or road construction experience preferred
- Proven heavy equipment operating experience
- Strong understanding of elevations, slopes and finish grades
- Experience reading grade stakes and working from survey information
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence
- Ability to work extended hours and weekends during peak construction periods
- Strong safety awareness
- Able to work independently while contributing to a crew environment
- GPS/machine-control experience is considered an asset
