Job Overview
We are seeking a creative and reflective Science Teacher who believes that science education should go beyond memorizing facts and completing worksheets.
The successful candidate will help students develop scientific thinking, problem-solving skills, curiosity, and the ability to apply knowledge in meaningful situations. Lessons should be designed around clear learning goals and supported by purposeful experiments, investigations, and projects.
We are particularly interested in a teacher who understands how to challenge students intellectually without overwhelming them—someone who can break complex concepts into manageable steps, connect new learning with prior knowledge, and gradually guide students toward greater independence.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach Ontario secondary school Science courses in accordance with the Ontario Curriculum.
- Translate curriculum expectations into transparent and meaningful learning goals.
- Design inquiry-based and project-based learning experiences connected to real-world scientific questions.
- Manage students’ cognitive load by organizing complex concepts into logical, manageable learning sequences.
- Use demonstrations, experiments, models, diagrams, discussion, and technology purposefully rather than as isolated activities.
- Provide appropriate scaffolding at the beginning of learning and gradually remove support as students become more capable.
- Help students understand not only scientific facts, but also how scientific knowledge is developed, tested, and applied.
- Use assessment for learning, as learning, and of learning to monitor progress and adjust instruction.
- Support students with different academic backgrounds, learning needs,
and levels of English proficiency.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and engaging laboratory and classroom environment.
- Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects and contribute to the ongoing development of the school’s teaching model.
What We Are Looking For The ideal candidate:
- Has strong knowledge of science and can explain difficult concepts clearly and accurately.
- Is creative, curious, and willing to experiment with new teaching approaches.
- Can design a project beginning with a meaningful learning goal—not simply assign an activity and call it project-based learning.
- Knows how to balance direct instruction, guided practice, inquiry, experimentation, and independent work.
- Understands that effective teaching is not about making learning effortless, but about creating the right level of productive challenge.
- Can recognize when students are experiencing productive difficulty and when they are simply overloaded or confused.
- Encourages students to ask questions, test ideas, learn from failure, and reflect on their own thinking.
- Sets high expectations while providing structured and individualized support.
- Values student independence, responsibility, creativity, critical thinking, and continuous growth.
- Reflects on evidence of student learning and is committed to ongoing professional development.
