The Opportunity

As a start-up company in the refining businesses, KFI is seeking an engineer to join our refinery, located near Kerrobert, Saskatchewan, Canada.

The Junior Process

Engineer provides day-to-day engineering support to refinery operations, helping ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the plant. Working closely with Operations, Maintenance, HSE, and Engineering personnel, this role assists with process optimization, troubleshooting, performance monitoring, documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives..

Key Responsibilities

Process Monitoring & Optimization

- Monitor daily refinery performance and operating conditions.
- Analyze process data and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reliability, and product quality.
- Investigate process deviations and recommend corrective actions.
- Assist in optimizing unit operating parameters to maximize throughput and minimize energy consumption.
- Support production planning through performance analysis and reporting.

Operations Support

- Provide technical support to Operations during normal plant operations.
- Assist operators in troubleshooting process upsets.
- Participate in daily operations meetings and communicate engineering recommendations.
- Develop operating guidelines and best practices.
- Support startup, shutdown, and commissioning activities.

Process Engineering

- Perform process calculations including:
- Material balances
- Heat balances
- Hydraulic calculations
- Equipment sizing
- Assist with process simulations and process modelling.
- Maintain process documentation including:
- PFDs
- P&IDs;
- Equipment data
- Operating procedures





Continuous Improvement

- Identify opportunities to improve:
- Process safety
- Reliability
- Equipment performance
- Product quality
- Operating costs
- Participate in root cause investigations.
- Support Management of Change (MOC) activities.
- Assist in implementing engineering improvement projects.

Safety & Environmental

- Promote a strong safety culture throughout the refinery.
- Ensure engineering work complies with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in:
- Hazard assessments
- HAZOP reviews
- Incident investigations
- Risk assessments
- Support environmental compliance initiatives.

Project Support

- Assist with capital and maintenance projects.
- Coordinate engineering activities with contractors and vendors.
- Review vendor drawings and technical documentation.
- Track project progress and provide updates.
- Support commissioning and performance testing.

Documentation & Reporting

- Prepare engineering reports and technical recommendations.
- Maintain accurate engineering records.
- Develop standard operating procedures and work instructions.
- Create performance dashboards and KPI tracking where required.

Team Collaboration

- Work closely with:
- Operations

- Build strong working relationships across all departments.
- Participate in cross-functional improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering or Process Engineering.
- Eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Saskatchewan.
- 0–5 years of engineering experience.
- Refinery, petrochemical, oil & gas, or industrial processing experience is considered an asset.
- Co-op or internship experience in an industrial facility is preferred.

Skills and Competencies

- Understanding of chemical process engineering principles.
- Basic knowledge of refinery unit operations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to interpret PFDs, P&IDs;, and engineering drawings.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office.
- Experience with process simulation software is considered an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple assignments in a rapid-paced environment.
