Job Purpose The Land-Based Teacher is responsible for delivering culturally grounded educational programming that connects students to the land, Cree language, and traditional knowledge systems across kindergarten to Grade 12 programming within the Kitaskinaw Education Authority (KEA). This role supports students in developing a deeper understanding of nêhiyaw teachings, cultural identity, and relationships with land, community, and environment through experiential learning.

The Land-Based Teacher plans and delivers programming that incorporates seasonal teachings, traditional knowledge, environmental stewardship, and cultural practices, while implementing locally developed Cree curriculum and supporting relevant Alberta Education curriculum outcomes. At the high school level, the Land-Based Teacher may support the delivery of credit-based programming where appropriate, including locally developed courses, land-based studies, work experience connections, and cultural programming that contributes to high school completion. The Land-Based Teacher works collaboratively with Elders, knowledge keepers, teachers, administrators, and community members to provide meaningful and culturally respectful learning experiences for students.

Land-based learning within KEA recognizes that the land itself is a teacher, and that learning occurs through observation, participation, storytelling, and relationship.

Education, Experience And Requirements

- Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or equivalent.
- Valid Alberta Interim or Permanent Professional Teaching Certificate (minimum requirement).
- Teachers must provide a copy of their most recent Alberta Teaching Quality Standard Evaluation (TQS)
- Clear Criminal Record Check with the Vulnerability Sector and Child Welfare Intervention Check is required.

Working Conditions
- Work hours are from Monday to Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm
- Required to work a total of 40 hours per week (Essential Service)
- 10-month-based employee, with summers off per the annual operational calendar.
- Required to volunteer 100 hours per school year
- May require occasional lifting of light office supplies and equipment.
- This position may require travel to various locations for meetings and events.
- Participation in cultural activities, school events, and community engagement opportunities may be required.
- Work occurs in both classroom and outdoor environments throughout the school year.
- Activities may take place during different seasons and weather conditions.
- Must sign and adhere to the Enoch Cree Nation Confidentiality Agreement upon hire.
