DESCRIPTION: Nautilus is looking to fill a newly created Laboratory Assistant position in our accredited ecotoxicology laboratory. As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for, or participate in:
- Assisting laboratory biologist by performing basic lab tasks (e.g. support with water analysis)
- Assisting in receipt of samples for testing
- Performing tasks related to general housekeeping practices such as cleaning glassware
- Performing routine data entry
- Participate in staff meetings with laboratory managers and other technical staff to review workload requirements as needed
- Perform all tasks in a manner that supports Nautilus’s Quality Assurance Program
- Perform all activities in a manner that is consistent with Nautilus’s commitment to the health and safety of all staff, clients, and visitors
- Conduct all activities and interactions in a respectful and professional manner that is consistent with Nautilus’s policies
- Perform administrative tasks that come with the laboratory assistant job such as filing forms and maintaining documented paperwork
QUALIFICATIONS: This position will be of interest to those with a post-secondary (i.e. university or college) diploma in science. Previous lab experience and/or 1-2 years in LMS, sample receipt, shipping/receiving or inventory is considered an asset. A successful candidate is able to repetitively lift 35-40 lbs with limited material handling equipment (e.g. carts and lift carts), while efficiently handling and processing shipments in a quick paced environment. An understanding of heavy lifting techniques is considered an asset.
As a well-organized and conscientious worker, you are familiar with general laboratory procedures and laboratory safety. In addition, you are willing to learn safe handling procedures for chemicals and ecotoxicological samples.
You demonstrate strong computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, including data entry and record keeping. Strong time management and a high attention to detail are essential for success in this role. Candidates should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and communicating effectively. Reliability and willingness to work in a team environment are key attributes.
As an essential member of our team, you are available to work flexible hours and weekends (on a rotational basis).
TRAINING: During onboarding, new employees will receive an overview of the company, an in-depth review of Nautilus policies and procedures, and thorough training on our health and safety culture (H&S; orientation, personal protective equipment, workplace equipment, & on-the-job training).
Training for lab tasks will consist of reading Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), job shadowing, and hands-on supervised instruction. As Nautilus prioritizes quality and health and safety, ongoing training will be a part of your continued employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: As a laboratory assistant, there is a physical component to the position that will involve standing and/or sitting for prolonged periods of time (2-4 hours), plus the ability to repetitively lift 35-40 lbs with limited material handling equipment (e.g. carts and lift carts).
