Who We Are
Wayfair's Global Supplier Technology (GST) organization builds the tools and systems that power how thousands of suppliers work with Wayfair, from onboarding and catalog management to supplier advertising. Our mission is simple: give suppliers the tools they need to list, manage, and grow their business on Wayfair with as little friction as possible.
What You’ll Do
We are seeking a Lead Design Technologist to bridge the gap between design and engineering within Experience Design. Equally fluent in code and craft, they move effortlessly from refining UI interactions to shipping React prototypes and custom MCP servers.
The ideal candidate combines a high bar for product design, front-end engineering and component architecture with advanced proficiency in AI tools and workflows. Operating with high agency and autonomy, they proactively spot workflow friction, rapidly prototype solutions, set technical direction, and elevate team capabilities across modern front-end and AI practices.
- Build high-fidelity, functional prototypes in React and TypeScript to de-risk complex UX interactions and UI component architecture before committing core engineering resources.
- Design, build, and maintain custom scripts, MCPs and AI workflows that give design and engineering teams real, practical leverage and help scale quality across the entire product lifecycle.
- Act as the connective tissue between design and engineering, establishing shared processes that translate design intent into technical specifications and engineering constraints back into thoughtful design decisions.
- Scale and mature the existing design system across components, tokens, and documentation, ensuring the foundation evolves alongside team needs.
- Critically evaluate emerging AI tools and models to establish evidence-based standards, helping the organization democratize advanced AI capabilities while ensuring output risks don't outweigh speed gains.
- Establish repeatable frameworks for cross-functional collaboration, empowering non-technical team members to leverage AI tools and design system foundations to build and iterate independently.
What You'll Bring
- 7+ years of experience across product design, front-end engineering, or hybrid design-engineering roles. (Design Systems Designer, Design Technologist, UX Engineer, Design Engineer).
- Strong front-end engineering skills, especially modern CSS, TypeScript and React, with the judgment to know when prototype-quality code is enough and when it isn't.
- A strong design systems background spanning component architecture, tokens, documentation, governance, and adoption.
- Proven ability to independently drive interaction and product design from concept to completion, bringing strong craft and critical thinking.
- Familiarity with design tooling ecosystems (Figma API/plugins, design token pipelines, Storybook, etc.).
- Hands-on experience building with or on MCP (Model Context Protocol) or comparable agent/tooling architectures, you can explain how it works, not just that you've used it.
- Deep, active experience with AI-assisted design and development workflows, with a critical eye for their current limitations and failure modes.
- A track record of shipping quickly and with urgency in ambiguous, complex situations.
- Solid collaboration instincts; you can hold your own in a room with senior design and engineering leaders and move a decision forward.
Nice to Have
- Experience standing up internal AI tooling, agents, or automation used by a broader design or product org.
- Experience presenting technical or AI-strategy points of view to non-technical stakeholders.
