The Waterloo Region Law Association maintains a law library for its 640 members as well as visiting counsel. The library is located in the Waterloo Courthouse at 85 Frederick St, Kitchener, ON. We are seeking a part-time staff member to assist the Executive Director and Library Manager, and Library Technician in providing service.

POSITION DESCRIPTION The Law Library Assistant for the Waterloo Region Law Association is a permanent part-time staff position working 20 hours per week. The position is responsible for working with our members (lawyers and paralegals) and other library staff to provide a wide range of library services.

EDUCATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma required; post-secondary education is preferred. One year of library experience or enrollment in a Library Technician program is considered an asset.

REPORTS TO:

Executive Director and Library Manager

LOCATION:

Work must be completed at the physical location (85 Frederick St, Kitchener, ON). There is no option to work remotely.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Greets and provides customer service and directional assistance to library users, including:

a. assisting with use of the online catalogue; b. assisting with determining and locating information and materials;

c. assisting with the use of equipment such as public computers and printers;

d. program registrations;

e. recording usage statistics;

f. assisting with questions and other needs in person, by email, or by telephone.

1. Process incoming and outgoing interlibrary loan material.
2. Read shelves, shelves material,



tidies shelves and checks shelves for missing, on-hold and overdue materials.
3. Maintains equipment in good working order, including ensuring the photocopier has paper and clearing unwanted files from public access computers.
4. Assists with inventory of office supplies
5. Checks the book return, check in library material, assist with Inter library loans
6. Assists with events and registrations as required.
7. Maintains statistical records and usage information
8. Assist with registration for programs
9. Send current awareness emails to members
10. Data entry and special projects
11. Post information on social media

SKILLS:

1. Ability to give friendly, helpful, and professional service to library users.
2. Ability to communicate effectively with patrons and staff.
3. Requires sound judgment, initiative, tact and courtesy, attention to detail, and the ability to work as a team with a small staff, making adjustments to best meet the needs of the patrons.
4. Computer skills including word processing, printing, social media, and the ability to learn and use new software and online resources. Ability to explain and demonstrate these resources to library users.

The ability to learn the use of the KF modified classification system, and other library procedures is required.

HOURS: Permanent part time, 20 hours per week between the hours of 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday. This position does not have evenings or weekend shifts.

COMPENSATION:

$19.80 per hour, 4% vacation pay plus a comprehensive benefits package (after 90 days).
