The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist I (Microbiology) to join the Laboratory Services team at Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife.

You'll use advanced laboratory techniques and technology to identify infectious diseases, support physicians with critical diagnostic information, and help protect the health of communities across the North.

About the Role

Reporting to the Technical Supervisor, Microbiology, you'll perform a wide range of microbiology testing using both complex laboratory instrumentation and manual techniques. You'll analyze and interpret biological samples, ensure quality and accuracy through rigorous quality control processes, troubleshoot laboratory equipment, and collaborate with healthcare professionals to support timely diagnosis and treatment. The laboratory provides referral services for hospitals, health centres, public health programs, and communities throughout the Northwest Territories and the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut.

Key Responsibilities

- Prepare, culture, analyze, and interpret biological samples using recognized microbiology practices




- Operate complex laboratory equipment and perform manual microbiological testing
- Verify, interpret, and release patient results through the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
- Perform quality control, proficiency testing, equipment calibration, and preventative maintenance
- Troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and support continuous laboratory operations
- Provide technical guidance to laboratory staff and healthcare professionals while delivering exceptional customer service

Qualifications Required Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

- Completion of a recognized Canadian Medical Laboratory Technology diploma or degree program
- Recent experience (within the past five years) working in a Canadian hospital microbiology laboratory
- Internationally educated Medical Laboratory Technologists must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a Canadian hospital laboratory
- Applicants must be registered with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) as a General Registered Technologist. Current graduates awaiting certification are encouraged to apply; registration must be obtained before employment begins.
