Our core business hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday (hours may vary based on project and site requirements). You’ll work closely with internal teams, contractors, and clients to ensure accurate, reliable metering solutions that support efficient energy management and make a meaningful impact. METERING TECHNICIAN - COMMERCIAL
General Description:
Under the general direction of the Field Manager, Commercial, the Commercial Metering Technician is responsible for the execution of field services in accordance with contractual, technical, and regulatory requirements. This includes the commissioning, verification, inspection, and sealing of commercial submetering systems under Measurement Canada authorization. The role requires a strong understanding of instrument transformer-based metering, data communications, and compliance documentation,
and operates with a high degree of field independence while working collaboratively with project teams, contractors, and external stakeholders.
The Commercial Metering Technician is expected to represent CARMA Corp. professionally at all client sites, maintain relationships with property management and building staff, and contribute to the consistent delivery of technically accurate and compliant metering services.
Characteristics, Features, Requirements:
The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple technical tasks independently in a field-based environment. The role requires strict adherence to CARMA’s quality management system, including QWI procedures, ISO 9001:2015 requirements, and all applicable Measurement Canada directives. Candidates must clearly demonstrate the ability to perform all technical responsibilities described below.
Critical to this role is the consistent, accurate, and timely completion of assigned field work and compliance documentation.
Reporting:
This role reports directly to the Field Manager, Commercial, who serves as the training mentor and is responsible for monitoring performance goals, objectives, and work schedules. The Commercial Metering Technician is required to complete reporting activities including, but not limited to:
- Submit weekly activity and expense reports by 5:00 PM Friday each week, including service work orders, meter commissioning reports, and accuracy inspection records to the Field Manager, Commercial or designate.
Important and Essential Duties: The duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Metering Technician Responsibilities
Commissioning, Verification, and Compliance
- Commission, verify, and inspect commercial submetering systems in accordance with Measurement Canada requirements, applicable QWI procedures, and CARMA’s quality management system;
- Perform meter verification activities and sealing operations under Measurement Canada authorization, following prescribed procedures and documentation requirements;
- Apply working knowledge of instrument transformer-based metering, including current transformer (CT) and potential transformer (PT) configurations, to support verification, termination, and troubleshooting activities;
- Identify and escalate non-conformances or field conditions that require quality process management review, and document findings accurately;
- Perform meter terminations and wiring verification in accordance with applicable electrical standards, safety requirements, project specifications, and metering equipment documentation.
Data Communications and Network Configuration
- Configure and commission data communication systems including network gateways, serial and IP-based communication devices, and remote data delivery systems;
- Apply knowledge of communication protocols and network topology standards to support meter data collection, logging, and system integration;
- Troubleshoot communication faults across hardware and software layers, including meter firmware, gateway configuration, and data server connectivity.
Documentation and Compliance Records
- Complete installation verification worksheets (IVWs), commissioning reports, and all required compliance documentation accurately and in accordance with CARMA’s quality management procedures;
- Maintain metering records, as-built documentation, and equipment logs to support regulatory compliance and billing accuracy;
- Support project system design, equipment configuration, and preparation of field documentation in accordance with project specifications.
Project Coordination and Stakeholder Communication
- Coordinate with installing contractors, property management, and building staff regarding installation requirements, equipment deliveries, scheduling, and deficiency resolution;
- Manage equipment inventory, delivery coordination, and return material authorizations (RMAs) as required;
- Execute Customer Service Agreements in accordance with the defined scope of work, which may vary by project and client;
- Provide client and on-site training on CARMA and approved third-party products and services.
Technical Development
- Pursue and maintain applicable Measurement Canada accreditation levels as required by the role and directed by the Field Manager, Commercial;
- Support the training and development of less experienced technicians through on-site guidance and knowledge transfer;
- Stay current with product updates, procedural changes, and regulatory requirements relevant to commercial metering operations.
Experience/Knowledge/Ability
- Experience in commercial submetering, electrical systems, or utility metering installation and commissioning is an asset;
- Familiarity with instrument transformer-based electrical systems, including 347/600V commercial environments, is considered an asset;
- Knowledge of data communication systems, network configuration, and serial or IP-based protocols is an asset;
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, equipment schematics, and technical specifications;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to complete accurate technical documentation;
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and make sound field judgments within defined procedures;
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams, contractors, and clients in a professional and service-oriented manner.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Electronics, Electrical, or Mechanical disciplines, or an Electrical Trade qualification;
- Measurement Canada technician accreditation, or eligibility and willingness to obtain accreditation as required by the role;
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications;
- A valid G class driver’s license and proof of insurance coverage is required.
Working Conditions
- Work may be performed in a variety of settings, including electrical and mechanical rooms, meter rooms, utility vaults, confined spaces, construction sites, and commercial office buildings;
- Exposure to environmental conditions such as dust, noise, temperature changes, and areas with limited ventilation; all work performed in accordance with applicable safety requirements;
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing ladders, and lifting equipment up to 50 lbs;
- Use of hand tools, power tools, calibrated testing instruments, and mobile devices;
- Work may require operating at heights and in restricted or tight areas; training will be provided for ladders and elevated work platforms;
- Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required and will be provided;
- Occasional work outside of regular hours and occasional travel may be required;

Starting salary is determined based on factors such as relevant experience, education, training, skills, certifications, and overall alignment with the position. Internal pay equity and market compensation data may also be considered. Final salary varies based on several considerations, and starting offers are usually below the top of the posted range.
