Company Description The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) is a local government organization serving more than 48,000 residents across north central Vancouver Island, the Discovery Islands, and nearby mainland inlets, including four electoral areas, a treaty First Nation, and five member municipalities. Established in 2008 following a provincial restructuring, the SRD’s corporate office is located at 990 Cedar Street in Campbell River, BC.

Role Description The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor role is an on-site position based at Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex in Campbell River, BC. Day-to-day responsibilities include monitoring pool areas to ensure patron safety, enforcing facility rules, responding to emergencies, and providing first aid and water rescues as needed.
Swim Instructors will plan and deliver swimming lessons for various age groups and skill levels, evaluate participant progress, and maintain accurate records of lesson attendance and achievements. Team members will assist with opening and closing procedures, pool and deck set-up, basic facility cleanliness, and communication with patrons regarding programs, schedules, and safety practices.
The role involves working collaboratively with other aquatic staff, participating in regular in-service training, and upholding the SRD’s standards for inclusive, respectful customer service.
Full Time Lifeguard/Instructors work 40 hours per week in a fixed weekly schedule and receive a generous beneifts package.
Part Time Lifeguard/Instructors work 17-24 hours per week as scheduled in senority order based on their availability.
Qualifications
- Required Certifications: Current National Lifeguard, AMOA, Standard First Aid, CPR-C with AED or higher, and Swim for Life Instructor.
- Candidates should possess strong aquatic safety and rescue skills, Skills are assesed prior to interview.
- Candidates should be experienced at teaching swim lessons to varied age groups, and the ability to adapt instruction to different learning needs.
- Our ideal cadidate posseses:
- Communication and customer service skills, including clear verbal communication, active listening, conflict de-escalation, and a courteous, inclusive approach to working with the public.
- Teamwork and reliability skills, including the ability to collaborate with colleagues, follow established procedures, be punctual for shifts, and maintain professional conduct in a busy recreational environment.
- Strong organization and observational skills, such as attention to detail when monitoring pool activities, accurate record-keeping for lessons and incidents, and effective time management during programs.
- Additional beneficial qualifications include prior experience in municipal or community recreation settings, familiarity with diverse cultural communities, willingness to participate in ongoing training, and advance course certification such as Aquafitness, Lifeasving Instructor, National Lifeguard Instructor
