Eastgate Academy is seeking an enthusiastic, energetic, and student-centered Middle School Science & Maths Teacher (Part Time -20hours weekly) to join our growing school community.
Located in a supportive and team-oriented environment, Eastgate Academy is a small independent K–9 school committed to nurturing the academic, social, emotional, and physical development of every child. We believe in creating meaningful learning experiences that inspire curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.
Position Summary
Responsibilities The central role of an Eastgate teacher is to foster a safe and positive learning environment for all students while planning, documenting, evidencing or assessing and facilitating learning that meets the IB Programme Standards and Practices.
Learning & Teaching
Eastgate Teachers are expected to:
- Foster a safe and positive learning environment for all students
- Teach mixed-age French language acquisition classes and other designate classes through transdisciplinary units of inquiry
- Monitor and support student academic, co-curricular, and personal growth through a high level of pastoral care
- Collaborate with colleagues and related professionals interdependently as a team in promoting and nurturing the academic, physical, emotional and social safety and development for all students
- Demonstrate use of evidence-based instructional and classroom management strategies to create engaging learning environments
- Value the support of parents, guardians, families and communities in schools by engaging them in purposeful conversations and communication on an as-needed basis
Community Building Eastgate Teachers are expected to:
- Contribute to the co-curricular life of the school
- Supervision of students during unstructured play and other times
- Occasionally cover classes
- Attend designated functions that take place outside of normal school hours including but not limited to: Community events such as parent information nights and concerts, 3-Way Conferences or Student Led Conferences held in the afternoon and/or evenings, Admissions assessment days, etc.
Collaboration, Curriculum Development Eastgate Teachers are expected to:
- Attend meetings held prior to the opening of the school year and following the close of the school year
- Contribute to the development and implementation of an essential agreement that supports how the staff engages with one another as a team
- Engage fully in the collaborative planning process created by the teaching staff to design and implement a programme of inquiry, including unit plans, lessons plans, and assessments based on the BC curriculum and the IB approaches to teaching
- Integrate current and emerging information communication technologies (ICT) to meet the learning needs of 21st Century students in an inclusive education setting
- Assess student learning through the effective use of a variety of assessment strategies and practices in an inclusive education setting
- Meet planning deadlines and house all planning and resources in a shared drive designated by leadership
- Provide ongoing feedback to students and parent/guardians regarding student progress
Professional Growth & Development Eastgate teachers are expected to:
- Engage in professional growth and development throughout the academic year by creating and updating a growth plan and participating in professional growth and development opportunities organized by the school
- Adapt their teaching methodology and strategies based upon observation and interests of students, ongoing reflection of assessments and evaluation data and evidence, and the study of emergent educational research
- Reflect upon, investigate and discuss their instructional practices, based on student evidence, collaboratively with colleagues, school leaders,
and related education professionals in order to improve student learning
Communication Eastgate teachers are expected to:
- Create and maintain open lines of communication with a variety of stakeholders throughout the school year
- Use email, Toddle, and when necessary, phone conversations and in-person meetings to communicate with families
- Contribute to and send (homeroom teachers) end-of-month newsletters to families
- Support the creation of informative emails sent to families at the beginning of each Unit of Inquiry
- Understand and act in a professional manner with students, their parents/guardians, colleagues, school leaders, and related professional personnel among whom all communication is respectful, honest, equitable and timely (within one school day)
Other: Eastgate Teachers are expected to:
- Perform other duties as are reasonably requested by the principal
- Abide by Eastgate Academy policies and expectations
- Always act professionally and in the best interest of Eastgate Academy
- Dress in a way that respects the profession and that students are in uniform
- Maintain a valid teaching certificate in a Canadian province
- Meet all deadlines, and if difficulties or extenuating circumstances arise, inform the Principal
