We are seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Payroll and Accounting Specialist to take responsibility for the accurate and timely processing of our full payroll cycle.
This position processes payroll for both hourly and salaried employees and is responsible for payroll deductions, government remittances, vacation tracking, Records of Employment, year-end reporting and payroll-related accounting entries.
The successful candidate will also support the accounting department with bank reconciliations, journal entries, general ledger reconciliations, month-end activities and intercompany accounting. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced payroll skilled who is comfortable working independently while contributing to a collaborative accounting team.
Key ResponsibilitiesPayroll
- Process full-cycle payroll accurately and on schedule for hourly and salaried employees
- Review and verify timesheets, hours, earnings, deductions, vacation pay and other payroll information
- Maintain employee payroll records, including new hires, changes, terminations and leaves
- Calculate and process statutory and other payroll deductions
- Prepare and submit payroll remittances accurately and within required deadlines
- Track employee vacation entitlements, usage and balances
- Prepare and submit Records of Employment
- Prepare T4s and other required year-end payroll reporting
- Prepare and post payroll journal entries
- Reconcile payroll registers, payroll liabilities and related general ledger accounts
- Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies
- Respond professionally and confidentially to employee payroll inquiries
- Maintain current knowledge of applicable payroll legislation and requirements
- Prepare payroll records and supporting documentation for audits and year-end review
Accounting Support
- Prepare bank and/or credit-card reconciliations
- Prepare recurring and adjusting journal entries
- Complete assigned general ledger account reconciliations
- Assist with month-end closing activities
- Record and reconcile intercompany transactions
- Investigate discrepancies and follow up on outstanding items
- Maintain accurate and organized accounting records
- Provide additional support to the accounting department as required
Qualifications
- Minimum three years of experience processing full-cycle Canadian payroll
- Demonstrated experience processing both hourly and salaried payroll
- Sound knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, statutory deductions and remittance requirements
- Experience preparing ROEs, T4s and payroll journal entries
- Experience reconciling payroll liabilities and general ledger accounts
- Post-secondary education in payroll, accounting, business administration or a related field an asset
- Payroll Compliance Professional designation completed or in progress is preferred
- Experience with bank reconciliations, journal entries, month-end procedures and intercompany accounting is an asset
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Experience with Sage or Maestro is preferred
- Experience with Yardi is considered an asset
