Characteristics of the Work -Type and Level of Work

This is a professional position involving direct contact with special needs and medically fragile children. There is also considerable consultation with the interdisciplinary team and families.

The Physiotherapist reports to the Executive Director.

Chief Responsibilities

1. Motor assessment, activity planning and treatment for students. This may include, but not be limited to:

a. On site assessments, standardized and/or validated motor assessments b. Goal and treatment plan development and implementation for therapeutic play and classroom programs c. Range of motion assessments d. Guidelines and instructions for physical therapy equipment use e. Communication of precautions and contraindications to physical therapy treatment Consultation will occur as appropriate with families regarding these assessments, plans and treatments.
1. Consultation to teaching and resource staff regarding positioning and handling of students in the classroom and during various activities.
2. Authorization of Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) equipment, including mobility and self care equipment.
3. Coordination of pediatric adjunctive services, such as, but not restricted to:

4. Orthoses and orthotist services
5. Vendor and other equipment services
6. Attendance at GRH Seating Clinic appointments with the children and their parent/guardian, when possible.
7. Attendance at GRH Orthopedic Treatment Clinic appointments and other clinic appointments, when necessary.
8. Consultation with teaching and resource staff regarding switch choices and placement.

With training support interventions or respiratory assessment and treatment (chest care), in collaboration with nursing, may include:

a. Postural drainage b. Percussion and vibration c. Complex airways and equipment management d. Item C, D and other treatment techniques as authorized by the registered nurse
1. Home visits, time permitting or if Home Care is unable to provide the following services:

a. Assessment for equipment use in the home b. Instruction and demonstration of physical therapy treatment programs in the home upon approval from the Elves Executive Director.
1. Lifting and carrying in-services for all staff (permanent, relief, temporary, practicum students). These are to include discussion and demonstration of:

a. One person lifts and carries b. Two person lifts and carries c. Zero lifting policy d. Use of the mechanical lift e. Productive and biomechanically sound lifting f. Safety of staff and students in lifting tasks
1. Attendance at in-services, rounds, and relevant courses to maintain and upgrade knowledge and skills.
2. Coordination of in-services for physical therapy related topics, and provision of in-services when requested or required.
3. Attendance at team meetings,



parent-team meetings and resource team meetings.
4. Consultation with staff and families for students in the Elves’ Outreach Program.
5. Collaboration with health care, community and school agencies involved in providing care for children currently attending Elves, or transferring to or from Elves, include but are not limited to:

a. Alberta Health Services b. Schools or Program Unit Funded sites such as Getting Ready for Inclusion Today (GRIT) c. Student Health Initiative Program d. Consulting Services Outreach, (Edmonton Public Schools)

e. Edmonton Public and Separate Schools, as applicable f. Rosecrest g. Group Homes

1. Supervision of Physical Therapy Assistant(s).
2. Assistance or coordination of fundraising projects related to physical therapy.
3. Emergency or urgent supports to classrooms based on Elves School Program protocols or as per request from the Executive Director.

Education and Experience

- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Physiotherapy, or equivalent.
- Current licensure with the College of Physical Therapists of Alberta
- Personal malpractice insurance.
- Experience with persons with special needs is preferable.
- Experience working as part of a collaborative rehabilitation team an asset.

Pay: $35.00-$45.00 per hour
