Position title: Research Assistant

Principal Investigator/Supervisor: Prof. Jim Gavin

The Centre for Human Flourishing (CHF) at Concordia University is seeking a Research Assistant to support the qualitative data analysis for the SSHRC-funded study “Flourishing Through Technological Change: AI Capability-Building as a Human Systems Challenge in the Nonprofit Sector.” The study is a bounded cooperative inquiry examining how non-technical nonprofit professionals experience the transition from using AI to building AI workflows, and the confidence, professional identity, and ethical dimensions of that transition. Working under the functional supervision of the Co-Investigator and reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant will contribute to the analysis of the study's qualitative and quantitative material and to the preparation of its research outputs. The position begins as the program's data-collection phase concludes and runs through the primary analysis and writing period.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to

- Validate and correct machine-generated transcripts of session recordings and interviews, and de-identify transcript material where required.




- Collaborate in developing and applying qualitative codes (both inductive and deductive) and maintain the study's codebook.
- Produce descriptive summaries of the study's quantitative elements (e.g., continuity scales, dashboard trajectories, and the “what-was-built” and persistence rubrics).
- Handle sensitive research data securely and maintain a explicit analytic decision log documenting coding and data-analysis decisions and codebook rationale.
- Contribute to the preparation of the study's research outputs, including the theme document, manuscripts for publication, subsequent grant applications and the final report to SSHRC.
- Other tasks related to this project as outlined by the Immediate Supervisor and/or Principal Investigator.

Qualifications/skills required

Required:

- Graduate-level research training (Master's or doctoral) in industrial and organizational psychology, applied human sciences, or a related social-science discipline.
- Experience conducting qualitative data analysis, including coding (inductive and deductive) and thematic analysis.
- Strong academic writing and a track record of contributing to research outputs.
- Meticulous attention to detail, for transcript validation and de-identification.
- Familiarity with qualitative analysis software (e.g., NVivo, Atlas.ti, Dedoose), or willingness to learn.
- Completion of TCPS 2:



CORE (Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans) certification prior to accessing study data.
- A signed confidentiality undertaking is a condition of the appointment.

Assets:

- Knowledge of the ethics or societal implications of AI, the nonprofit sector, or human-systems approaches to technological change.
- Familiarity with participatory or action-research methods, cooperative inquiry, or the Most Significant Change technique.
- Experience with mixed-methods research and descriptive quantitative summaries.
- Working knowledge of French.
