The Reach Respite Program is seeking an experienced caregiver to support an active pre-teen male with autism and an intellectual disability. This child is full of energy, enjoys being out in the community, and thrives with a caregiver who is confident, patient, and ready to actively participate in activities rather than simply supervise. This is a contractor position, perfect for those seeking a few hours of work, mid day, during the week (1:00pm to 3:00pm, 2 hours per visit, 2 days a week) and is an excellent prospect for someone who enjoys building meaningful relationships while supporting a child's independence, social skills, emotional regulation, and participation in community life.
The family lives in the area of Newton Wave Pool.
About the Role The successful caregiver will:
- Build a positive, trusting relationship through shared interests and consistent support.
- Participate in active community outings and recreational activities.
- Support emotional regulation using positive behaviour support strategies.
- Encourage communication, independence, and life skills.
- Maintain a calm, confident, and consistent approach during challenging situations.
- Work collaboratively with the family and Respite Program Coordinator.
We're Looking for Someone Who:
- Has experience supporting children or youth with autism and/or intellectual or developmental disabilities.
- Is patient, dependable, and able to build rapport with pre-teens.
- Has the energy and stamina to keep pace with an active pre-teen during community-based activities.
- Enjoys being active and participating in outdoor recreation, walks, parks, and other community activities.
- Is confident setting respectful boundaries while maintaining a positive, engaging approach.
- Communicates effectively with families and the Reach Respite Coordinator.
- Is reliable, organized, and committed to providing high-quality support.
Qualifications
- Minimum three years of experience supporting children or youth with developmental disabilities.
- Post-secondary education in Human Services, Education, Psychology, Behaviour Intervention, Child and Youth Care, Social Work, or a related field (completed or in progress).
- Experience using positive behaviour support, emotional regulation strategies, following a positive behavioural support plan and safety plan.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
