The Town of New Tecumseth is looking for a Roads Operator (Seasonal) to join our team for the winter season.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Operations – Transportation and Parks, this position performs all aspects of work related to the servicing, maintenance and inspection within the Town’s Right of Ways in both urban and rural settings including but not limited to roads, sidewalks, traffic control devices, ditches, culverts, bridges, storm sewers, street trees, streetlights, and works yards. Under the direction of the immediate Supervisor or Senior Operator carries out all duties using appropriate equipment effectively and in a manner that will ensure the safety of self, co-workers and the general public. How you contribute to our organization:
- Safely operates and maintains all applicable equipment. Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment in a clean and tidy condition; performs daily inspections of same. Records deficiencies in the Vehicle Inspection Report which is then submitted to the Senior Operator or Supervisor for forwarding to the Fleet Division. Keeps all documents up to date in accordance with MTO and Town requirements; Makes minor running repairs to equipment while on the job.
- Performs installation of temporary traffic control devices such as lane and road closures, detours,
flagging and all other required work zone safety requirements as per the Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7. May be required to act as a traffic control person via flagging or operation of other traffic control devices.
- Repairs and maintains the road and sidewalk networks including hard surfaces (asphalt concrete) and gravel surfaces in an urban and rural workplace, including but not limited to cold patching, saw cut and asphalt removals, tack coating, and hot laid asphalt paving.
- Grades gravel roads and shoulders to promote adequate drainage.
- Maintains ditches including but not limited to removal of sediment, debris, and garbage from roadside ditches, ensuring proper elevations and depth of ditches and culverts. Ensures site restorations.
- Conducts winter maintenance operations including snow plowing, application of road maintenance materials including but not limited to sand and salt to roadways, sidewalks, and parking lots. Removes accumulated snow from roadways, sidewalks and boulevards as required.
- Installs erosion control measures as required.
- Performs right of way street sweeping and flushing in a timely manner and without unduly interfering with the flow of traffic.
- Grades and sets grades for construction of roads, ditches and installation of culverts.
- Rebuilds or replaces maintenance holes, catch basin tops and pipes leading to them.
- Performs downtown maintenance including but not limited to debris and litter pick up, emptying of garbage receptacle, painting of benches, decorative lamps and garbage receptacles,
installation of banners and other decorative items.
- Performs routine maintenance on storm sewer systems such as cleaning and inspections and repairing of catch basins and maintenance holes. Clears and repairs blocked storm sewers as required, entering confined spaces, if necessary, with proper training and prescribed equipment; Repairs broken pipes.
What you bring to the team:
- Requires successful completion of high school diploma.
- Requires a DZ class driver’s licence, and the ability to submit a clean driver’s abstract upon hire.
- Requires Standard First Aid with CPR-C certification (or the ability to obtain within a month of hire).
- 2-3 years of experience in a similar position would be an asset.
- Must demonstrate sound knowledge of maintenance and construction practices as well as construction equipment and vehicles. T.J. Mahoney Construction and Maintenance modules and Snow School from the OGRA Roads School courses would be an asset.
- Must be comfortable using electronic devices such as tablets, iPads and laptops.
Salary: $29.91 – $35.19, plus 4% vacation pay and optional enrolment in OMERS pension plan Hours: 40 hours per week
Location: Depot 1 - 6375 14th Line, Alliston
