About this Opportunity
This position will commence September 2026.
Subject to intermittent layoffs during holidays and reading breaks.
Requirements
Must be available for a variety of shifts, including early mornings (starting at 6:00 am), late evenings (up to 11pm) and weekends.
Reliable transportation is essential due to limited public transit during early morning and late night hours.
Food Protected level 1 required.
Job Summary
University Food Services (UNFS) is the primary provider of food and beverage services at the University of Victoria, serving students, staff, faculty, and external clients through retail, residential dining, and its catering division, Degrees Catering. UNFS operates a variety of campus venues ranging from small grab-and-go cafés to high-volume food court operations.
The Second Cook is responsible for participating in the day-to-day retail, residential and/or catering operations within their designated areas. The Second Cook performs duties as assigned by supervisory personnel within their work unit as per established standards of operation.
Job Requirements
Experience:
- A minimum 1 year experience in a high-volume culinary environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Specialized Knowledge/Education:
- Completion of Grade 12.
- Valid Food Safe Level l Certification.
Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to read, write, and comprehend English, and accurately follow written and verbal instructions.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a service-oriented attitude, ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team.
- Computer literate, with proficiency in basic applications.
- Familiarity with food service operations and customer service principles.
- Knowledge of provincial food safety and sanitation standards, and ability to maintain high levels of personal hygiene and workplace safety.
