Senior Commissioning Technologist

Position Summary

Iconic Power Systems is seeking an experienced Senior Commissioning Technologist to lead the testing, commissioning, and energization of high-voltage power systems. This role is responsible for delivering safe, efficient, and high-quality commissioning services on substation construction and upgrade projects.

Working closely with Project Managers, Construction Supervisors, Engineers, and clients, the Senior Commissioning Technologist will lead commissioning activities, troubleshoot technical issues, analyze test results, and provide mentorship to junior team members. This position plays a key role in ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with technical specifications and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead commissioning activities for high-voltage substations and power system projects.
- Test, inspect, troubleshoot, and commission equipment including: Power transformers, Circuit breakers, Instrument transformers, Switchgear, Protective relays, SCADA systems
- Analyze test results and identify equipment deficiencies or installation issues.
- Prepare daily field reports and commissioning documentation.
- Coordinate commissioning activities with Construction Supervisors, Project Managers, Engineers, contractors, and clients.
- Review project packages to verify design accuracy and material requirements prior to project execution.
- Develop outage plans and commissioning strategies when required.
- Lead pre-job meetings, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and field-level hazard assessments.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable safety programs, procedures, and regulations.
- Support project turnover, energization activities, and deficiency resolution.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to Junior and Intermediate Commissioning Technologists.
- Participate in project planning, estimating, and execution strategy development.

Qualifications





Required

- Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in power system commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Strong knowledge of power systems, substation equipment, protection and control systems.
- Experience commissioning high-voltage electrical equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical, protection and control, and SCADA drawings.
- Experience using electrical testing equipment and software, including Omicron, Doble, Megger, power analyzers, and multimeters.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Solid written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License.
- Willingness to travel based on project requirements.

Assets

- Experience working in brownfield substation environments.
- Experience with SEL, GE, Siemens, and ABB relays.
- Power system switching certification and experience holding Guarantees of Isolation (GOIs).
- Experience leading commissioning teams and outage activities.
