Senior Java Software Engineer - Kafka

Location: Waterloo, ON (Remote considered within EST)

Duration: 12-Month Contract (Maternity Leave Coverage)

Overview

Our client is seeking a Senior Java Software Engineer to join a Platform Engineering team responsible for building contemporary, enterprise-grade APIs and microservices. This role offers the opportunity to develop cloud-native solutions from the ground up while working with modern technologies including Kubernetes, Kafka, Spring Boot, and AWS.

Responsibilities

- Design, develop, and deploy Java REST APIs and microservices
- Build event-driven services using Kafka
- Develop cloud-native applications using Spring Boot, Docker, and Kubernetes
- Collaborate with architecture and engineering teams to deliver scalable solutions
- Support CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
- Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve application issues
- Mentor junior developers and contribute to technical best practices
- Support and enhance legacy Java applications when required

Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of Java application development experience
- Strong experience with Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, SOAP, JSON, OpenAPI/Swagger




- Experience building microservices and web services
- Hands-on experience with Kafka or Kafka Streams
- Experience with CI/CD and DevOps tools such as Jenkins, Artifactory, Bitbucket, Maven, or Ansible
- Experience working across the full software development lifecycle
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Post-secondary education in Computer Science or a related field

Nice to Have
- Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, Okta, MongoDB, or PostgreSQL
- Experience with WebSphere, DB2, Spring MVC, SonarQube, or IBM ODM
- Exposure to Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) technologies
- Financial services or Group Retirement domain experience
