Description The Bachelor of Education program in the School of Education (Faculty of Education & Social Work) at Thompson Rivers University is seeking one or two sessional faculty members who will teach one or two sections of EDCD 3100 in Fall of 2026. Robust candidates will have extensive knowledge of child development, and have teaching experience in K-12 and post-secondary settings.

EDCD 3100 (Child Development and Teaching):

This introductory course presents an overview of child development as it relates to K-12 teaching. Theoretical frameworks related to differences in cognitive, linguistic, social, cultural, emotional, and physical development of children and Indigenous views of child development are explored. Teacher candidates learn about trauma-informed approaches to teaching and learning, and the impact of trauma on a child's physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being.

Teacher candidates design developmentally appropriate learning experiences that demonstrate an application of course content.



Teacher candidates develop their skills as reflective practitioners by examining their own teaching practice and developing future practice based on the relevant psychology and research covered in the course.

Requirements

- A Bachelor of Education is required
- A Master of Education is required
- Recent successful experience as a K-12 teacher strongly preferred and three years successful full time classroom experience is required
- Advanced knowledge of the subject area is required
- Experience and excellent understanding of child development and how this relates to elementary or secondary schools is required
- Previous successful post-secondary school teaching experience is preferred
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills is required
- Proven skills in building intercultural understanding, empathy and mutual respect are required
- Demonstrated experience in integrating Aboriginal knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) is required
- Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect (TRC CA 63) is required
- Teaching excellence, including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA10), is required
