About the Justice Education Society (JES)
The Justice Education Society of British Columbia (JES) is a non-profit organization with over 30 years of experience providing public legal education and justice system capacity building in Canada and overseas. In Canada, JES helps more than 700,000 British Columbians learn about our justice system and address their legal issues. Internationally, JES has programs in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Panama and Guyana which work with national institutions to strengthen justice systems, access to justice and citizen security. JES has offices in Canada, Guatemala, and Honduras and diverse sources of funding including donors and provincial, federal and overseas governments. I. The Project
Through legal education sessions, we strive to help people better understand their rights and the legal systems affecting them. Our focus is on temporary foreign workers on a closed work permit. We work with community and partnering organizations to help deliver meaningful and impactful workshops on a variety of legal topics. These topics include Canadian justice system basics, employment, tenancy, discrimination,
and human rights. We are looking for skilled facilitators that are empathetic, engaging and can deliver legal education in Spanish.
II. Deliverables
- At the request and direction of JES, facilitator will provide legal education in-person or virtual or attend events (cultural events, health days at farms) to meet with temporary foreign workers and provide information or education using JES provided legal education materials in Spanish
- Facilitators will provide a Q and A at the end of the workshop to provide legal information and not legal advice.
- Coordination of workshops will be done by JES
- Report to JES on target outcomes
III. Qualifications
The selected candidate must have at minimum the following knowledge, skills, experience and competencies:
- Robust written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills in Spanish
- Demonstrated history of facilitating workshops an asset
- Ability to prepare and provide clear, concise, and complete verbal and written information at a level appropriate to the audiences
- Strong knowledge of Canadian legal system and BC laws an asset
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse and multilingual communities
- Willing to travel in BC and work evenings and weekends
- Valid BC driver's license and access to vehicle
IV. Terms of Payment
Facilitators will be paid a rate of $30/hr. Expecting total hours to be between 90-125 hours.
