Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Special Education Learning Consultant (Independent Contractor) to support students with diverse learning needs. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in special education, classroom instruction, and working with children with disabilities. We are seeking an experienced, certified teacher with background in special education to join us as a Learning Consultant (Independent Contractor).

In this role, you will manage your own caseload to administer relevant screenings and assessments to students with diverse learning needs, interpret the data, and directly guide classroom teachers on curriculum modifications and practical adaptations. You will collaborate with educators, parents, and students to develop tailored educational strategies that foster academic growth and confidence. This role offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on students’ educational journeys through expert guidance and personalized support.

This is a flexible, task-based contract. While the Independent Contractor retains full control over their working hours for administrative, scoring, and report-writing tasks, direct one-on-one student testing and teacher consultation sessions must be self-scheduled by the contractor during standard school operational hours ([e.g., 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday to Friday]) when students and school staff are available

Key Responsibilities

- Academic Assessment: Administer 1-on-1 standardized learning assessments (reading, writing, and mathematics) to students with special needs using diagnostic tools.
- Analysis & Report Writing: Score assessment batteries, analyze data, and draft comprehensive, professional learning profile reports outlining student strengths, gaps, and instructional needs.
- Teacher Consultation: Collaborate with classroom teachers to interpret results and co-create actionable classroom adaptations (accommodations) and curriculum modifications.
- Resource Curation: Guide teaching staff toward evidence-based special education materials, intervention tools,



and resources tailored to the student's profile.

Scheduling & Flexibility

- Autonomous Scheduling: You maintain control over your schedule provided deadlines are met. You will coordinate directly with school staff to self-schedule your direct testing and consultation sessions.
- Daytime Availability: Direct student testing and teacher meetings must be conducted during standard school hours when students and staff are present.
- Remote Administrative Work: Scoring, data analysis, and report writing can be completed entirely at your own pace and location outside of school hours.

Requirements

- Teaching Credentials: Valid Alberta Professional Teaching Certificate (or eligibility for provincial certification), with special education experience.
- Special Education Background: Minimum of 3–5 years of specialized experience teaching or supporting neurodivergent students, or students with complex learning profiles and developmental disabilities.
- Assessment Expertise: Proven, hands-on experience administering and interpreting standardized academic testing tools
- Consultative Skills: Expert knowledge of the Alberta curriculum, differentiation strategies, and assistive learning technologies.
- Strong knowledge of special education principles, teaching methodologies, and individualized education programs (IEPs).
- Professional Communication: Maintain explicit, respectful, and prompt communication with school administrators, classroom teachers, and internal teams.
- Quality of Work: Deliver thorough, meticulous, and objective learning profile reports that meet professional educational standards.
- Ability to adapt teaching strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles and needs.
- A relevant certification or degree in special education and teaching
- Ability to use technology for data collection, scoring and reporting
