Job Overview

We are seeking a passionate and energetic Sports & Recreation Assistant to join our dedicated team! The Sports and Recreation Assistant is a key support role within the Recreation Department and reports directly to the Recreation Manager. You would be responsible for assisting with the planning, development, coordination, and delivery of recreational programs and activities that meet the diverse needs of the Ochapowace community and its members.

This position supports athlete participation in the Indian Winter and Summer Games, as well as the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG), through effective planning and coordination of related activities and events. The Sports and Recreation Assistant also works collaboratively with the education system, community organizations, and stakeholders to identify and address recreational needs for all age groups.

Responsibilities

- Develop, organize, implement, and supervise engaging and innovative youth and teen recreation programs.
- Research, apply for, and administer grants related to youth and recreation initiatives, including program budgeting and reporting requirements.
- Assist with planning, organizing, and coordinating activities related to the Indian Winter and Summer Games and other sporting events.
- Coordinate community athletic programs, including minor sports such as fastball, softball, volleyball, soccer, track and field, and other recreational activities.
- Plan, organize, and supervise community gym nights and recreational events.
- Develop and coordinate group activities and community-based programming.
- Arrange and facilitate training opportunities for coaches, volunteers, and participants, including CPR and other certifications.




- Transport registered participants to scheduled sporting events, tournaments, training sessions, and related activities, as required.
- Coordinate training and development opportunities that promote participation and skill enhancement in sports and recreation.
- Recruit, organize, and supervise volunteers for community events and recreational programs.
- Prepare and present regular reports to the Recreation Committee on program activities and outcomes.
- Coordinate Recreation Committee meetings, including preparing agendas, notifying committee members, recording meeting information, and completing administrative tasks such as cheque requisitions.
- Foster positive relationships with community members, organizations, schools, and external partners to enhance sports and recreation opportunities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned in support of the Sports and Recreation Department.

Experience

- Experience working with youth, families, and community recreation programs.
- Solid organizational, planning, and coordination skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Knowledge of sports programming, event coordination, and community development.
- Valid driver's license and ability to transport participants when required.
- First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain certification.
