The Opportunity:
The Team Leader, Government Relations and Grants is responsible for providing functional leadership and coordinating the delivery of the City of Airdrie’s government relations, advocacy, and grants activities in support of Council‑approved priorities. The position leads strategic advocacy initiatives, oversees policy and legislative analysis, builds and maintains intergovernmental and stakeholder relationships, and ensures coordinated engagement across City business units to influence public policy and external funding opportunities. The role also provides financial and quality oversight of government relations and grants activities, including briefing and reporting to senior leadership, ensuring alignment with approved budgets, corporate objectives, and established governance and reporting requirements.
Responsibilities include
- Provide day to day functional and people leadership to the Government Relations and Grants team by coordinating workloads, assigning and prioritizing work, monitoring performance to ensure timely and high quality deliverables, providing coaching, mentorship, and subject matter expertise, supporting employee development, and serving as the first point of escalation for complex files, competing priorities, or emerging issues.
- Lead and execute strategic advocacy initiatives in alignment with Council and ELT direction by advancing corporate priorities, positioning the City as a credible and proactive voice among growing municipalities, engaging directly with provincial and federal ministers, elected officials, and senior staff on complex or sensitive matters, and representing the City at intergovernmental meetings, conferences, and forums.
- Monitor and analyze municipal, provincial, and federal legislation, policies, budgets, and initiatives to provide research‑based strategic advice to identify opportunities for the City to influence public policy and funding decisions.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with officials across other orders of government, municipal peers, regional partners, and sector organizations to strengthen partnerships, support relationships with elected officials and senior administration, and advance understanding of Airdrie’s priorities through effective engagement.
- Ensure internal alignment and coordination on advocacy priorities and funding opportunities by working collaboratively with City business units, coordinating corporate input into intergovernmental initiatives and consultations, and partnering with Corporate Communications on advocacy messaging and issues management.
- Lead the preparation, review, and quality assurance of briefing notes, reports, and Council materials by providing strategic advice to ELT and Council, ensuring advocacy and grant deliverables are accurate and aligned with corporate objectives, and supporting continuous improvement of advocacy and grants processes and practices.
- Provide financial and budget oversight for government relations and grants activities by supporting budget development and forecasting, monitoring expenditures, ensuring alignment with approved budgets, and maximizing the effective use of grant funding in accordance with corporate financial controls and reporting requirements.
You Bring:
- Post‑secondary degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Public Policy, Social Sciences, or a related field.
- Minimum 6–10 years of progressive experience in government relations, advocacy, public affairs, policy analysis, or related fields.
- Demonstrated experience working with multiple orders of government.
- Experience in a municipal or broader public‑sector environment.
- Proven ability to lead complex files and coordinate work across multiple contributors.
- Strong understanding of municipal governance, legislative processes, and public policy development.
- Demonstrated ability to provide functional leadership, mentorship, and subject‑matter expertise.
- Strong political acuity, sound judgment, and professional discretion.
- Ability to influence, build consensus, and lead without direct authority.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and relationship‑building skills.
- Strategic, adaptable, and cooperative approach in a dynamic environment.

This is a full time position that works 37.5 hours per week.
