The Aboriginal Mother Centre Society (AMCS) is a non-profit organization with a mission to support Aboriginal mothers and Aboriginal children by providing a nurturing environment and services that honor and respect their Aboriginal traditions and values. The Centre is dedicated to fostering resilience, promoting well-being and celebrating the strength and wisdom of their cultures.

The Transformational Housing (TH) at AMCS is a place where Aboriginal mothers, who are facing homelessness and/or have their child/ren in care of the Ministry, can come to stay in a supportive setting and attend programs that aid housing stabilization and healthier lifestyle choices. The women can rebuild their sense of self-worth and identity for a better future for themselves and their children. AMCS is dedicated to supporting Aboriginal families by providing cultural traditional services through a wholistic grassroots approach.

What you bring

- Degree in social work or counselling.
- 2+ years providing services to the indigenous community, relevant coursework in Indigenous studies, or equivalent life experience.
- Thorough knowledge about and understanding of impact of colonialism upon the Indigenous community.
- Understanding of issues facing Indigenous people in the Metro Vancouver area.
- Ability to identify and carry out appropriate patient-centered therapeutic interventions with knowledge/understanding of past and current trauma, substance use and substance use disorder, and concurrent disorders.
- Strong case management skills and commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
- Advanced ability to establish rapport with program participants with multiple barriers, to explore issues that are beyond the presenting concerns.
- Excellent problem-solving, mediation,



and intervention skills; ability to handle stressful program participant issues.
- Demonstrated knowledge of mental health and substance use issues, best practices and evidence-based practice.
- Working knowledge of legislation and government policies and procedures that relate to the program participants, i.e. child protection system, justice system, law enforcement, family law.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to speak and write clearly, concisely, and effectively.
- Ability to multi-task and establish priorities; effectively organize workload and manage time.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Clear Criminal Record Vulnerable Sector search.
- Class 5 Driver's License.

What you will do:

- Build trusting relationships with program participants and their children.
- In collaboration with the Wellness program assistant-manager, create a care plan for those program participants with complex needs.
- Carry out appropriate therapeutic interventions according to the care plan, keeping in mind trauma, substance use disorder, and concurrent disorders.
- Refer to other services providers (behaviour interventionist, treatment, etc.) as appropriate.
- Liaise with social workers, law enforcement, lawyers, or other professionals.
- Provide information and support to other team members – both one-on-one and in a group setting – enabling them to support the care plans appropriate to their roles.
- Support inter-group mediation as needed.

Hours of Work: Part-time (0.4FTE) until March 31, 2027 extension pending funding renewal

Due to the nature of the work environment, it is required that all staff members perform duties beyond their , such as, but not limited to, answering phone, taking messages, helping other employees with organizing community events, and assist co-workers regardless of the program.
