OnCourse Education, a registered private secondary school and learning center in Hamilton, is currently accepting applications for qualified tutors/teachers to provide one-on-one or small-group tutoring support to secondary school students, with the possibility of also teaching high school credits. Our secondary school tutors/teachers help students in Grades 9 – 12 develop learning independence and help individuals reach, and exceed, their academic goals.
At present, OnCourse is looking for a High School Math and Science Tutor with a focus on Senior-Level Biology, Chemistry, and Data Management. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who wish to gain experience in an educational setting and work with youth on a part-time basis. Those genuinely interested in helping students build skills and confidence and helping them better understand themselves as learners will find this a rewarding experience.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Providing academic support to students requiring help with high school science and math, with a focus on senior biology, chemistry, and data management.
- Working with students to improve organization, time management, and test/exam- taking skills as needed.
- Working with a variety of students, some with specific learning challenges, including ADD/ADHD, mental health challenges, NVLD, dyslexia, and Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Completing quarterly reports on student progress
- Liaising with the Program Director regarding resources,
teaching strategies, and progress
- Informing individualized program design and providing regular feedback on the success of the program
Qualifications and Skills
- Excellent command of the English language, both written and oral
- College or University degree or certification/degree in progress
- Knowledge of the Ontario school curriculum and expected outcomes for students at the secondary level
- Previous experience tutoring and/or teaching high school math and science courses
- Functional computer skills, including the use of Apple and MS platform devices
- Excellent communication skills
- A minimum of 2 afternoons and/or evenings per week available for tutoring/ teaching
- Ability to attend in-person tutoring classes at the center
- Friendly, with a positive attitude and a willingness to help students meet and exceed their potential
- Previous Special Education experience and/or experience working with students with learning challenges and learning disabilities is not essential, but considered an asset
