Overview

As a member of the military, Water, Fuels and Environment Technicians provide water supply, wastewater treatment, and environmental engineering support to operational units at home and abroad. This position is one of seven Construction Engineering roles that deliver all construction, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering services to Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) operations.

Key Responsibilities

- Install, operate and maintain water treatment and supply systems.
- Install, operate and maintain wastewater collection and treatment systems.
- Set up and monitor various environmental programs.
- Produce associated mechanical designs, specifications and drawings.
- Conduct reconnaissance related to the above functions.
- Assist other Construction Engineering tradespersons.

Work Environment

Technicians may work day or night and must adapt to varying environmental conditions. They maintain skills while employed at home units or on humanitarian and United Nations assignments. If you join the Regular Force, upon completion of required training you will be assigned to your first base and may be relocated during your career. If you join the Primary Reserve Force, you will work part‑time through a Reserve unit, typically one night per week and some weekends, with the possibility of full‑time employment.

Entry Requirements

- No previous work experience or career‑related skills required.



CAF recruiters will assess if your interests and attributes match the occupation.
- Minimum education: completion of Grade 10 or Secondary 4 (Quebec Grade 10 Applied Math or Math 416 / CST 4). Foreign education may be accepted.

Training

- Basic Military Qualification course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School (Saint‑Jean‑sur‑Richelieu, Quebec).
- Training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Gagetown, Recent Brunswick – approximately 21 weeks covering environmental skills, tools and test equipment, occupational codes, drawing interpretation, water distribution and treatment, wastewater disposal, fuel storage, chemistry, mechanics, maths, physics, brazing and welding.
- Optional specialised courses: water plant technician, wastewater plant technician, environmental assessor, certified engineering technician (mechanical).

Part‑time Options

This position is available for part‑time employment with the Primary Reserve across Canada. Reserve Force members normally serve part‑time but can volunteer for full‑time or deployment assignments, are paid during training, and receive a benefits package and pension contributions similar to regular forces.
