Job Description
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
The Unit Supervisor, Cytogenetics, reports to the Lead Technologist, Victoria Cluster, and receives direction from the Technical Coordinators and Specialists and medical staff (Cytogeneticist, Division Head of Cytogenetics). Responsible for the day to day operations of the Cytogenetics section, performs technical laboratory procedures, and provides a variety of supervisory and administrative functions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training And Experience
Successful completion of recognized competency assessment exam and registration in the relevant field(s)
of practice in accordance with the Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR) pathways, or certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS). Successful completion of a recognized diploma program in Cytogenetics or Clinical Genetics. Bachelor of Science in a related discipline. Five (5) years recent related experience, including one (1) year supervisory experience or completion of recognized supervisory courses, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

- Demonstrate clinical competence with a thorough knowledge of procedures and best practice in Cytogenetics procedures and techniques.
- Demonstrate good organizational, instructional, observation and assessment skills.
- Demonstrate ability to maintain current on procedural changes, new equipment, techniques, and other relevant skills.
- Demonstrate knowledge of computer systems related to the Laboratory, such as CERNER.
- Utilize sound judgment, tact and empathy to resolve conflict.
- Foster and promote positive public relations.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal effectively with others including staff, patients and medical staff.
- Ability to teach and provide leadership, administrative, supervision and evaluation.
- Demonstrate problem-solving skills including workflow, delegation, and process improvement.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work for self and others.
- Ability to set up and maintain records.
- Ability to operate related equipment, including computerized systems utilizing a variety of software applications.
