Haida Child & Family is a Haida-led organization providing culturally appropriate wrap around services to Haida children and families.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Practice, the Resource Social Worker (SW) will provide culturally appropriate and holistic services to children and families within the parameters provided by the B.C. Child, Family and Community Services Act, and the Aboriginal Operational and Practice Standards and Indicators (AOPSI). Using clinical and interpersonal skills as well as good case management systems the Resource SW is responsible for assisting, supporting and recruiting families to become caregivers for the Haida community.

Key Responsibilities

· Recruit, train and develop capacity within the Haida communities to provide alternate care homes

· Develop and implement ongoing caregiver recruitment strategies to meet the needs of children and families within the Haida community

· Organizing training/educational events and sessions to support and recruit caregivers.

· Supports the development, coordination, and delivery of caregiver training, ensuring caregivers are prepared for their role and understand expectations.

· Support prospective caregivers by providing information packages and resources to help them understand the role and assess their readiness.

· Support and build relationships with caregivers and be a regular point of contact for caregivers to provide guidance, encouragement, and problem-solving support to caregivers.

· Provide information, make referrals, and connect caregivers to relevant services, resources, and supports available through HCF and the community such as counseling, respite, or cultural services.

· Help organize and deliver required training for new caregivers and encourage ongoing learning and skill development

· Acting as a part of the team composed of other professionals, the child’s caregivers, identified elders, natural parents, extended family and clan.





· Complete home visits to check on how the child and caregiver are doing and identify any needs or concerns.

· Keep clear and accurate records by documenting caregiver contacts, visits, and important updates

· Maintain organized case files and follow required policies

· Maintain effective and skilled working relationships with colleagues, biological parents, caregivers, and other professionals.

· Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

· Knowledge of Haida culture, history and the implications of colonization for indigenous children, youth, families and communities.

· Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work; or equivalent related degree with one year or more experience.

· Working knowledge of federal, provincial, and aboriginal organizations mandated to provide health, counseling, Child, and Family Services.

· Must have sound knowledge of, the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA), and An Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Metis children, youth and families (Bill C-92).

· Ability to develop strong working relationships with children in care, caregivers, biological parents, community members and other employees working on Haida Gwaii and off Island.

· Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

· Professional commitment, flexibility and great dispute resolution skills, along with leadership abilities.

· Computer literacy for Microsoft Word, Excel and other computer software. Familiarity with MCFD ICM/MIS system will be an asset.

· Ability to balance competing priorities and work under pressure.

· An equivalent combination of education, lived experience, and relevant work experience will be considered.

Working Conditions

· Travel between communities will be required.

· Monday to Friday schedule (35-hour week) but flexibility is needed from time to time based on Agency needs, including occasional evenings and weekends.

· Must be able to obtain and maintain a Solicitor General Criminal Records Check.

· Must be able to obtain and maintain a BC Driver’s License and possess their own vehicle which must be suitable to transport clients on occasion in Haida Gwaii.
