Your Opportunity:

If you are a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) seeking to apply your advanced perioperative expertise in a dynamic, high-acuity environment, the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute (MAZ) Cardiac Operating Room is the place for you! The RNFA is a perioperative nurse who provides specialized patient care and first-assist support during cardiac surgical procedures. This role offers a unique and challenging opportunity to work within Adult Cardiac Surgery and Mechanical Circulatory Support programs, including Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs), Organ Transplantation, and other innovative cardiac procedures. As a member of a highly collaborative multidisciplinary team, the RNFA is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care across the perioperative continuum. Working in partnership with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, nursing and other healthcare professionals, the RNFA supports excellent and secure surgical outcomes through advanced clinical practice, critical thinking, and evidence-informed decision making. The RNFA provides comprehensive perioperative nursing care throughout the patient's surgical journey, including advanced intraoperative first-assist functions as well as traditional scrub and circulating responsibilities. In this expanded practice role, you will apply specialized knowledge, certification, and extensive operating room experience to optimize patient outcomes and enhance surgical efficiency. You will also serve as a patient advocate, educator, and resource for staff, patients and families while promoting safe, quality, patient- and family-centered care that reflects the values and vision of AHS. The RNFA practices in accordance with the standards of the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) and the guidelines of the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC).

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, you must complete the following free courses: CRNA Medication Management (Chapters 1-4), available at https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/learning-and-development/learning-modules/ and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification, available at https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Demonstrate excellent assessment, organizational, and patient care skills. Ability to communicate findings concisely and accurately. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated initiative, flexibility and independence in a team atmosphere. Demonstrated ability to positively adapt towards change. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and professional development. Participate and lead where needed in Unit/Program/Site/Zone/Provincial activities. Being available for on-call assignments is required as is being punctual. A minimum of 5 years of MAZ Cardiac Operating Room experience required with both scrub and circulating on-call experience in both adults and pediatric cardiac surgeries. RNFA Certificate required. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.
