The Opportunity

We are hiring a Horticulturist and Enhancements Division Lead to lead our enhancements work most days, with maintenance support woven in weekly and as a bigger focus during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall). This is a leadership role for someone who is equal parts horticultural craftsperson, mentor, and client-facing professional.

You will lead small crews, plan and execute garden improvement work to a high standard. From start to finish you will plan and install spring, summer and fall annual installations (urns and beds), and soil and mulch deliveries and installations. You will help create a smooth experience for clients as work shifts between weekly maintenance and seasonal enhancement priorities.

Pay, Season, and Perks

- $28 to $33 per hour for Leads with 5+ years in garden maintenance and enhancement experience and demonstrated leadership experience of 2+ years

Typical Day

The day begins at 7:00 AM at our shop (near Ossington Avenue and Dupont Street) and ends around 5:00 PM back at the shop for unloading and cleanup. A large client list means significant time in the truck, and frequent in-and-out throughout the day. This is outdoor work in all conditions. We use public washrooms and typically eat lunch in vehicles or parks.

What You’ll Do (Core Responsibilities)Lead and Deliver Enhancements Work (Primary Focus)





- Lead and execute enhancement work such as planting (annuals, perennials, shrubs, small trees), bed renovations, removals, mulching, soiling, gravel/stone work, seasonal refreshes, and other garden improvements
- Own the daily plan: scope, sequencing, task assignment, quality control, and jobsite organization
- Coordinate sourcing, material orders, deliveries and installations
- Keep rework low through clean execution and strong crew coaching

Provide Maintenance Support (Weekly and Shoulder Seasons)

- Jump into weekly maintenance support as scheduled and especially in spring and fall, helping the team stay ahead of seasonal demands
- Maintain RSL’s standards in: mindful mowing, controlled trimming, attentive hedge work, purposeful pruning, knowledgeable weeding, clean edging, gentle cultivating, and plant care
- Help ensure the “maintenance to enhancement” connection is visible on-site (what the garden needs next, what will improve long-term performance)

Apply Strong Horticultural Judgment

- Diagnose plant health issues and recommend horticultural solutions
- Apply best-practice techniques for pruning, deadheading, staking, thinning, cultivating, and IPM observation
- Protect high-end property details and finishes (hardscape, lighting, irrigation components, containers, features) while working

Lead People, Culture, and Communication

- Coach, mentor, and train teammates in enhancement and fine gardening standards
- Foster respectful collaboration, resolve conflict, and give clear, constructive feedback
- Serve as an on-site client contact when needed, answering questions and addressing concerns professionally
- Communicate with office staff with updates as required (timing, material needs, issues, wins, and any scope changes)

Safety, Equipment, and Shop Responsibilities

- Ensure PPE use, safe tool practices, and hazard awareness (pedestrians, traffic, thrown objects,



etc.)
- Perform and oversee basic equipment and vehicle care, and flag tools that need service
- Participate in shop and truck cleanliness, receiving orders, and daily load-out/unload expectations

Qualifications

- Valid G driver’s license (required)
- Industry certifications are an asset, not required

Experience

- Minimum 5 seasons (April to December) in garden maintenance or fine gardening
- Minimum 2 seasons in a leadership role (crew lead, supervisor, or equivalent), with clear examples of leading people, quality, and client communication
- Comfortable owning outcomes, not simply “working alongside”

Skills We’re Looking For

- Strong plant knowledge and horticultural technique (pruning, plant care, soil, bedwork, seasonal timing)
- Confident operation of essential equipment (mowers, line trimmers, backpack blowers, hedge trimmers), plus hand tools used in fine gardening
- Clear verbal communication, active listening, and calm decision-making under time constraints
- Organized thinking (scope, sequence, materials, time) and pride in detail

Physical Requirements

You must be physically fit and willing to work long days outdoors in heat, cold, rain, and wind. Expect kneeling, lifting (up to 25 kg), and the normal wear-and-tear of hands-on garden work. Safety, pacing, and endurance matter here.
