Qualifications
PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND/OR INUIT).
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Undergraduate degree and at least the first year of a graduate archival studies degree is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- At least one year of directly related administrative experience is required.
- Experience working on a computer and using a variety of software is required (e.g., Microsoft Word and Excel, Adobe Acrobat Reader).
- Experience with database software is required.
- Experience working within an office environment is required.
- Experience arranging and describing archival records is required.
- Experience digitizing photographs and textual records is required.
- Experience with historical research is required.
- Experience working with or using archival records is required.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to comprehend, visualize, and intellectually compartmentalize archival collections and archival functions is required.
- In addition to fluency in English, demonstrated verbal and written comprehension in French or other relevant language is preferred.
- Understanding of relationship between records and history and concept of primary sources is required.
- Excellent office skills are required, including:
- Communications and interpersonal skills
- Organizational skills
- Time management skills
- Document management skills
- Keyboarding skills
- Ability to think analytically, anticipate and resolve problems, exercise sound judgment and carry out duties with tact and diplomacy in a confidential environment is required.
- Ability to work independently and undertake work as directed is required.
- Ability to plan, organize and prioritize diverse tasks with attention to detail is required.
- Must be self-motivated and proficient in multi-tasking to meet competing deadlines.
- Ability to keep sensitive matters confidential is required.
- Technical abilities are required, including:
- Proficiency with computers and software commonly used in the office
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience or interest in working with a university or other educational institution.
- Experience or interest in working with Residential School Survivors.
- Familiarity with the University of Manitoba.
- Corporate knowledge of the NCTR and the TRC.
Key responsibilities
Providing arrangement and description of archival material, including creating and maintaining intellectual control over archival records
- Assisting in processing archival material, including background research, appraisal and selection, arrangement if necessary,
drafting descriptive entries according to the NCTR archival standards, data entry, and creation of web pages.
- Researching and staying up-to-date with archival best practices and standards.
Creating digital copies of archival material for access and preservation
- Scanning or photographing archival records to NCTR archival standards.
- Preparing records for ingestion into the NCTR’s preservation and access systems.
Other projects or assistance to the general operation of the NCTR
- Attending Archives staff meetings and other meetings as required.
- Assisting with the general operation of the NCTR.
- Submitting work plans and reports.
- Other duties as assigned.
