Job Description: Spiritual Care Practitioner (Contracted Position)

Location: Langley Lodge
Reports To: Manager, Therapeutic Recreation and Volunteers

Hours of Work: 15 hours/week 3x5 hours shifts

Position Summary

The Spiritual Care Practitioner (SCP) at Langley Lodge supports the spiritual, emotional, and existential well-being of residents, families, and staff within a long-term care environment.

As a non-denominational organization, spiritual care is delivered in a manner that is inclusive, respectful, and responsive to the diverse beliefs, cultures, and values of all residents, including those who identify as spiritual, religious, or non-religious.

The SCP plays an integral role in enhancing residents’ quality of life, sense of meaning, dignity, and connection, particularly through illness, transition, and end-of-life.

Key Responsibilities

Resident-Centred Spiritual Care

- Provide individualized spiritual and emotional support through presence, active listening, and compassionate engagement
- Support residents experiencing grief, loneliness, life transitions, and cognitive or physical decline
- Facilitate opportunities for reflection, prayer, meditation, or meaningful conversation based on resident preference
- Promote dignity, purpose, and resident autonomy in all interactions

Family & End-of-Life Support

- Offer spiritual and emotional support to families during illness, transition, and palliative care
- Support residents and families during end-of-life care, including facilitating rituals or practices as requested by the Resident




- Respect and support the resident choices surrounding end of life care inclusive of MAID.
- Working together with the Therapeutic Team to assist with Memorial and/or Celebration of Life services at Langley Lodge

Spiritual Care Programming & Community Life

- Plan and implement inclusive spiritual programming that reflects diverse beliefs and traditions
- Facilitate group activities such as reflection groups, memorial services, seasonal observances, and multicultural celebrations
- Collaborate with Recreation Therapy to integrate spiritual wellness into quality-of-life programming
- Adapt programming to support residents with dementia, mobility limitations, or sensory needs

Interdisciplinary Team Collaboration

- Work collaboratively as part of the interdisciplinary team to support holistic resident care
- Contribute to care conferences and participate in resident care planning
- Advocate for residents’ spiritual needs and preferences
- Document spiritual care interventions in accordance with Langley Lodge policies and standards

Community Partnerships & Volunteer Coordination

- Build relationships with local community spiritual leaders representing diverse traditions
- Coordinate and support spiritual care volunteers and visiting community representatives




- Facilitate access to spiritual or cultural resources as requested by residents or families

Qualifications

- Degree in Theology, Spiritual Care, Religious Studies, Counselling, Social Work, or a related field
- Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and/or equivalent training preferred
- Certification or eligibility with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC) preferred
- Experience in long-term care, geriatrics, palliative care, or healthcare settings
- Demonstrated understanding of multi-faith, cultural diversity, and inclusive care practices
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills

Working Conditions

- Long-term care environment supporting older adults with complex health needs
- Regular interaction with residents, families, staff, volunteers, and community partners
- Occasional evening, weekend, or on-call responsibilities may be required
