Manager of Environmental Services — Part-Time

21 hours per week

Reports to: Administrator / Executive Director

Position Type: Part-time management position, 21 hours per week

Position Summary

The Manager of Environmental Services is accountable for the effective planning, coordination, supervision, and ongoing monitoring of the organization’s environmental services functions, including housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, building services, safety, and related operational supports. The incumbent will promote and maintain a clean, safe, comfortable, well-maintained, and resident-centred environment, while ensuring services are delivered in accordance with applicable legislation, organizational policies, infection prevention and control requirements, occupational health and safety standards, and established quality expectations.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide leadership and oversight for the day-to-day operations of environmental services, including housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, waste management, grounds, equipment, and building systems.
- Establish, implement, and monitor departmental work routines, cleaning schedules, laundry processes, preventative maintenance schedules, inspection checklists, and operating procedures.
- Supervise, guide, schedule, and support environmental services personnel to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with expected quality standards.
- Participate in recruitment, orientation, training, performance feedback, and continuing education activities for departmental staff.
- Ensure resident rooms, common areas, equipment, furnishings, and grounds are maintained in a clean, safe, sanitary, and home-like condition.
- Monitor, prioritize, and respond to maintenance requests, repairs, hazards, spills, equipment concerns, and safety issues in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Coordinate minor repairs and act as the primary liaison with contractors, vendors, suppliers, and external service providers, as required.
- Support infection prevention and control practices by ensuring appropriate cleaning, disinfection, laundry handling, product use, outbreak response, and related documentation.
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels for supplies,



equipment, chemicals, linens, tools, and maintenance materials, and complete ordering within approved budget parameters.
- Conduct regular audits, inspections, environmental rounds, and quality improvement activities, ensuring findings and follow-up actions are documented.
- Support compliance with fire safety, emergency preparedness, occupational health and safety, WHMIS, equipment safety, and related staff training requirements.
- Work collaboratively with the Administrator, leadership team, residents, families, staff, contractors, and visitors to address concerns and support a safe, respectful, and service-oriented environment.
- Prepare, maintain, and review departmental records, logs, reports, policies, procedures, and compliance documentation.
- Demonstrate and promote a culture of resident-centred service, professionalism, teamwork, accountability, continuous improvement, and respect.

Qualifications

- Post-secondary education or relevant training in facilities management, building services, environmental services, maintenance, housekeeping/laundry operations, or a related discipline is preferred.
- Previous supervisory experience in environmental services, facilities, maintenance, housekeeping, laundry, health care, retirement living, or long-term care is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of building maintenance, preventative maintenance, housekeeping standards, laundry processes, infection prevention and control practices, and safe chemical handling.
- Working knowledge of applicable legislation and standards, including occupational health and safety, WHMIS, fire safety, public health guidance, and long-term care requirements, is considered an asset.
- Proven ability to lead staff, organize workflows, exercise sound judgment, resolve problems, prioritize competing demands,



and communicate effectively.
- Ability to work independently within a part time schedule while maintaining consistent follow-up, accurate documentation, and accountability for departmental outcomes.
- Robust interpersonal skills and a professional, respectful, resident-centred approach when interacting with residents, families, staff, contractors, and visitors.
- Computer proficiency sufficient to maintain records, schedules, work orders, email communications, supply orders, and reports.
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including walking, standing, bending, lifting within secure limits, inspecting building areas, and responding to maintenance or environmental concerns.

Working Conditions

- This is a part-time position consisting of 21 hours per week. Specific days and hours of work will be determined based on operational requirements.
- The successful candidate may be required to respond to urgent maintenance, safety, environmental, or emergency matters outside regularly scheduled hours.
- Work is performed in a resident care workplace and may involve exposure to cleaning products, laundry, maintenance areas, equipment rooms, noise, odours, and infectious materials where appropriate precautions are required.
- The incumbent must comply with all health and safety procedures, infection prevention and control practices, and required personal protective equipment protocols.
