The Opportunity

Artigiano is seeking an experienced and passionate Coffee Roaster to lead our roasting team and oversee the day-to-day operation of our production program. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can balance production volume, coffee quality, team development, and continuous operational improvement.

The Roasting Manager will be responsible for keeping production organized and consistent while strengthening the systems, skills, and coverage needed for a growing roasting operation. The successful candidate will bring strong roasting expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to train and support a team in a collaborative production environment.

Key Responsibilities

Production Leadership

· Plan and coordinate the daily production cycle, including preparation and maintenance of production crib sheets.

· Assign work and establish daily priorities based on production requirements, staffing, and quality needs.

· Monitor workflow throughout the day and adjust the production plan when circumstances change.

· Provide hands-on roasting and production coverage, including relief for employee breaks, absences, and vacations.

· Help maintain required production volumes without compromising safety, consistency, or coffee quality.

· Identify and lead improvements to production flow, efficiency, organization, and capacity.

Team Management and Training

· Manage, coach, and support roasting staff in their day-to-day work.

· Lead the onboarding and practical training of current roasting team members.

· Maintain clear roasting procedures, training standards, and operating documentation.

· Develop greater knowledge-sharing and cross-training across the team.

· Build contingency and succession plans for key roasting and production responsibilities.

· Provide constructive feedback and establish clear expectations for performance, quality, safety, and teamwork.

· Help create a respectful and accountable workplace where team members can develop their skills.

Coffee Quality

· Lead regular production cuppings and quality reviews with the roasting team.

· Use sensory evaluation, roast data, and team feedback to identify opportunities for improvement.

· Maintain consistency across roast profiles, production batches, equipment, and operators.

· Investigate quality concerns and coordinate appropriate corrective actions.

· Bridge high-quality specialty coffee practices with the operational demands of a volume-oriented production environment.

· Promote a culture in which quality is understood, measured, and supported by the entire team.

Roast Development and Profiling

· Lead the development, testing, and profiling of new roasts.

· Coordinate the production time, green coffee, equipment access, cupping, documentation, and team input required for successful roast development.

· Maintain accurate roast profiles and ensure approved profiles can be reproduced consistently by the roasting team.

· Review existing profiles and recommend adjustments based on seasonal coffee changes, equipment performance, quality results, and production needs.

· Balance experimentation and improvement with practical production constraints.

Green Coffee and Small-Lot Sourcing

· Support the sourcing and evaluation of small-lot coffees for Artigiano or other designated programs.

· Develop a small-lot sourcing approach that complements, rather than duplicates, the organization’s broader green coffee purchasing program.

· Evaluate prospective coffees through sample roasting and cupping.

· Collaborate with internal stakeholders on coffee selection, positioning, production feasibility, and launch planning.

· Help ensure sourcing decisions align with quality goals, customer expectations, operational capacity, and commercial requirements.

Operational Resilience

· Establish reliable coverage plans for essential roasting, quality, administrative, and production-planning duties.

· Improve the distribution of knowledge, authority, and responsibility within the roasting team.

· Help reduce operational risk by ensuring critical processes are documented and understood by multiple team members.

· Support longer-term workforce and capacity planning, including identifying future hiring and training needs.

Qualifications

· Significant professional coffee-roasting experience in a production environment.

· Demonstrated ability to develop, evaluate, and reproduce roast profiles.

· Strong sensory and cupping skills,

with the ability to translate findings into practical quality improvements.

· Experience in leadership and training production employees.

· Strong production-planning, organization, and problem-solving abilities.

· Ability to balance specialty coffee quality with production efficiency and volume requirements.

· Experience documenting procedures and establishing repeatable training or production systems.

· Ability to work effectively under changing production demands and make sound operational decisions.

· Comfort working directly on the production floor and providing hands-on coverage when needed.

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience operating and troubleshooting multiple types of commercial roasting equipment.

· Experience with green coffee evaluation, sample roasting, or small-lot sourcing.

· Familiarity with roast-logging, production-planning, inventory, or quality-management software.

· Experience leading process improvement or capacity-planning initiatives.

· Relevant coffee education, sensory certification, or industry training.
