Our team is small but skilled, and we're looking for an experienced hand to help set the standard on our shop floor.
The Role
We are seeking a Lead Machinist with a minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience across CNC mills and lathes, who also understands manual machining and knows when it's the better tool for the job. This isn't a support position — we need someone with the depth of experience to guide the shop day-to-day: choosing the right process for the job (CNC, manual, or EDM), directing other machinists on tooling and setups, and troubleshooting problems before they cost us time. You'll split your time between running machines yourself and directing/mentoring the rest of the team, with a planning component to keep work moving efficiently across all our equipment.
Responsibilities
- Act as the go-to person on the floor for process selection, tooling, and troubleshooting across mills, lathes, EDM, and manual equipment
- Judge when a job is better suited to manual machining (e.g., chasing a thread, four-jaw work, an odd-angle hole on a one-off part) versus tying up a CNC, and get it done — whether personally or by directing someone else
- Know when EDM is the right call for a job and route work accordingly (hands-on EDM experience not required)
- Guide and direct other machinists on setups, sequencing, and problem-solving
- Set up and operate CNC mills and lathes, splitting time between running jobs and supporting the team
- Assist with program edits, offsets, and optimization
- Plan and sequence jobs across machines to make efficient use of shop resources
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, charts, and tables
- Maintain tight tolerances and verify dimensions using precision measuring tools
- Ensure parts meet quality standards and specifications
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and reinforce shop safety procedures
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of machining experience across CNC mills and lathes, with a demonstrated ability to lead or mentor others
- Solid background on manual machines (lathes, mills) — ideally came up learning on them before moving to CNC
- Solid working knowledge of tooling selection, speeds/feeds, and machining strategy across varied jobs and processes
- Comfortable directing the work of other machinists and making fast, sound judgment calls on the floor
- Strong understanding of tolerances, GD&T;, and quality inspection methods
- Experience with CNC controls (Fanuc, Mazak, or similar)
- Excellent problem-solving skills and sound judgment under pressure
- Proven track record of keeping jobs on track and preventing costly downtime
