Heritage Field Technician

The Organization:

A.E.W. LP was formed in 2017 by Nlaka’pamux Nation Tribal Council member communities to carry out “on the ground” work related to archaeology, the environment and wildlife protection. This work has been made necessary by activities of others within the Nlaka’pamux homeland including transportation, mining, forestry, oil and gas, and utilities projects. The Nlaka’pamux Nation Tribal Council is not opposed to development within our homeland, but developments and activities must be consistent with Nlaka’pamux title and rights.

The Role:

A.E.W. Limited Partnership is seeking seasonal Heritage Field Technicians ending in November that are based in Kamloops or Lytton, BC. Working a Monday-to-Friday 5x2 schedule up to 12 hours a day,



Heritage Field Technicians support archaeological fieldwork by conducting surveys, excavations, heritage assessments, and construction monitoring. The role involves identifying and documenting heritage resources, assisting with environmental field studies, and performing physically demanding outdoor work in all weather conditions. Reporting to the Manager of Archaeology, the Heritage Field Technician will:

- Carry out archaeological survey, test excavation, and mitigative excavation in a Professional Cultural Resources Management setting
- Recognition, identification, and reporting of heritage sites, features, and materials
- Responsible for field support with wildlife, riparian and vegetation studies
- Participate in Heritage Field Reconnaissance (HFR) and Heritage Impact Assessments (HIA)
- Monitor ground disturbance from development activities (e.g., road building, forestry, building construction, etc.)
- Participate in archaeological site alteration activities (mitigation and research)
- Walking pedestrian survey transects
- Dig shovel tests (40 x 40 holes up to 70+ cm deep)
- Assist with the digging of larger Evaluative Units (1 x 1 m excavations)
- Screen excavated sediments




- Observe the operation of heavy machinery and ground disturbances
- Keep handwritten field notes documenting daily activities
- Provide daily field notes and/or oral reports to the Heritage Crew Leaders and/or, the Heritage Field Director
- Work with and provide support to other members of the field technicians and assist with other field and lab activities as required

Requirements:

- Previous experience in cultural heritage management, excavation volunteering, RISC training, other field inventory standards, environmental monitoring training, and / or archaeological field school, is an asset
- Valid first aid certificate
- Training (PCST) and ATV/UTV training or the ability to obtain
- Ability to carry out strenuous physical activity and occasional heavy lifting may be required
- Possess a current and valid Canadian Driver’s License with acceptable drivers abstract.
