The Stollery Children’s Hospital is a Level I Pediatric Trauma Centre providing specialized trauma and surgical care for children and families from central and northern Alberta, as well as across Western Canada. Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Unit Manager for the Trauma and Inpatient Surgery Unit provides operational and clinical leadership to support the delivery of safe, high-quality care. Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team and operational partners, the Unit Manager is accountable for planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and services that promote exceptional patient outcomes, staff engagement, and operational excellence. As a member of the leadership team, the Unit Manager supports the vision, mission, and values of Alberta Health Services and the Stollery Children’s Hospital while fostering a culture of respect, compassion, accountability, and continuous learning. The successful candidate will champion ChildKind principles and the Stollery’s commitment to Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS) by embedding evidence-informed approaches to pain prevention, assessment, and management while fostering a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement. Through meaningful partnerships, the Unit Manager will promote patient and family-centered care that recognizes children and caregivers as essential members of the care team and supports their physical, emotional, developmental, and psychosocial well-being. Accountable for staffing, workforce planning, performance management, resource management, and change leadership, the incumbent will build engaged teams, promote psychological safety, and lead harm reduction and quality initiatives that enhance patient and family experiences while advancing the delivery of safe, compassionate, and exceptional pediatric care.

Description:

Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Unit Manager for the Trauma and Inpatient Surgery Unit provides operational and clinical leadership within the Stollery Children’s Hospital, a Level I Pediatric Trauma Centre. The incumbent is accountable for the planning,



implementation, and evaluation of clinical services, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality care while supporting staff engagement, operational excellence, and positive patient outcomes. As a member of the leadership team, the Unit Manager fosters a culture of respect, compassion, accountability, and continuous improvement in alignment with Alberta Health Services and Stollery values. The Unit Manager champions ChildKind principles and Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS) by promoting evidence-informed pain management, patient safety, quality improvement, and harm-reduction initiatives. Through a collaborative approach with the multidisciplinary teams, patients, and families, this role supports patient- and family-centered care and the holistic well-being of children and caregivers. Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate demonstrates a strong commitment to patient and family-centered care with the ability to build meaningful partnerships. Knowledge of ChildKind principles and evidence-informed pediatric pain prevention, assessment, and management practices is required. The ideal candidate has experience leading patient safety, quality improvement, and harm-reduction initiatives, with the ability to foster a culture aligned with Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS) through transparency, accountability, continuous learning, and high reliability. Robust leadership, communication, relationship-building, and change management skills are essential, along with a demonstrated commitment to staff engagement, professional development, and psychological safety. The candidate must be able to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary pediatric environment and build strong partnerships with physicians, nursing, allied health, and operational leaders. Operational, financial, and human resource management experience, including workforce planning, performance management, resource management, and change leadership in a complex healthcare setting. A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or a related health discipline, along with current professional registration

Additional Required Qualifications:

Active CARNA registration. Strong management/leadership experience required. Must have a strong understanding of the operational flow within the Stollery Children’s hospital. Strong organizational, problem solving, analytical and decision-making skills are required. Demonstrated ability to establish and manage interpersonal relationships. Must be flexible and adaptable to meet the changing demands of the unit.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous leadership experience in acute care, preferably within pediatrics, trauma, or surgical services, is preferred. Graduate education in leadership, healthcare administration, or a related field is considered an asset.
