We are seeking a Health & Wellness Director to join our team at Cheam First Nation. The Health & Wellness Director will be responsible for the efficient and effective delivery of health and wellness programs and initiatives within our band. This role is multifaceted and deeply rooted in Cultural understanding and community engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Developing and implementing health and wellness programs that align with the community’s cultural values, traditions, and needs.
- Deep understanding of grants, programs, programming, reporting and grant deliverables.
- Engaging with community leaders and members to ensure programs are respectful and relevant.
- Provide education on health topics through workshops, seminars, and community events.
- Coordinate with other health professionals, agencies, and organizations to provide comprehensive care.
- Regularly assess the community’s health needs and the effectiveness of health programs.
- Lead and mentor a team of professionals, fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment.
- Design, oversee, and evaluate health and wellness programs.
- Address urgent health issues and crises, providing support and resources to affected individuals and families.
- Manage budgets, resources, and staff associated with health and wellness initiative.
- Other duties as required.

Education, Skills, Ability, knowledge, and Experience

- Knowledge and understanding of Stó:lō culture, traditions, teachings, and community dynamics is preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
- A solid understanding of healthcare procedures and regulations is required
- Min 5 years of significant, recent, relevant and senior experience working in a health setting, including the development, implementation, delivery, monitoring, evaluation,



and reporting of health and/or social service programs and services
- Experience in the development of culturally relevant and protected programs and services, including monitoring and evaluation, with a health and/or social services focus.
- Experience building a health plan that meets community needs and expectations.
- Working knowledge of the First Nations health systems in BC, as well as the tripartite relationships between Canada, BC and the FNHA, including knowledge of the key governing documents in the BC First Nation health care landscape (i.e. Tripartite First Nations Health Plan; Resolution 2011-01 and the Consensus Paper 2011, BC First Nations Perspective on New Health Governance; Resolution 2012-01 and the Consensus Paper 2012, Navigating the Currents of Change – Transitioning to a New First Nations Health Governance Structure; and the Tripartite Framework Agreement on First Nations Health)
- Knowledge of the historical factors of trauma that are relevant to the aspects of colonization, Residential schools in Canada etc.

Cultural Competency:

- Deep understanding of Stó:lō cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
- Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
- Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
- Commitment to cultural safety and decolonized approaches to service delivery.
- Deep understanding of Stó:lō teachings, traditions, and community dynamics.




- Ability to incorporate traditional knowledge and cultural practices into programming.
