We are seeking an experienced Controller to join our team. This position is based out of our Sales Office in Acheson, Alberta, with occasional travel required to our Production Plant in Barrhead, Alberta. .
Reporting directly to the Company Owner, the Controller is responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial management, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, supporting strategic decision-making, and leading the day-to-day accounting functions of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Oversee the company’s general ledger and ensure the accuracy of all financial records
- Manage month-end and year-end closing processes
- Prepare budgets, forecasts, and financial projections
- Monitor cash flow and working capital requirements
- Analyze financial performance and provide recommendations to improve profitability
Accounting & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Canadian accounting standards and applicable legislation
- Coordinate annual audits and work with external accountants and auditors
- Prepare and remit GST and other required government filings
- Maintain effective internal controls and accounting procedures
- Ensure compliance with corporate policies and financial best practices
Manufacturing & Cost Accounting
- Monitor inventory valuation and manufacturing costs
- Analyze labour, material, and overhead costs
- Review job costing and production cost reports
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiencies and reduce costs
- Assist management with pricing analysis and profitability reporting
Payroll & Human Resources Support
- Provide oversight and support for payroll processing
- Ensure payroll-related accounting entries are accurate
- Reconcile payroll accounts and government remittances
- Collaborate with Human Resources regarding employee benefits and payroll compliance
Leadership
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff
- Develop and improve accounting processes and financial reporting systems
- Collaborate with department managers to support operational planning
- Provide financial guidance to senior leadership
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration
- CPA designation (or actively pursuing) is preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with leadership responsibilities
- Manufacturing or construction industry experience is considered a solid asset
- Strong understanding of cost accounting and inventory management
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
- Knowledge of Canadian payroll, taxation, and regulatory requirements
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software
- Experience with ERP systems is considered an asset
