Calgary’s science centre is a pioneer in science entertainment and programming, with roots dating back to 1967. Home to one of Western Canada’s largest dome theatre, the Digital Immersion Gallery, VR experiences, and innovative spaces like Steven’s Lab, where interactive experiments unfold before your eyes. From the robot-dog Flint to Canada’s first robot-coa5ter, R05iE, and a 15-acre park surrounding the science of the developing brain, Spark is a hub for creative encounters.
Position Overview
Spark is currently recruiting for a salaried, permanent Building Operator (5th Class Power Engineer).
The Building Operator reports directly to the Supervisor, Facility Operations. The Building Operator will assist in facility maintenance operations including general repairs and preventative maintenance for the facility, outside grounds maintenance and related projects support.
The building is a LEED Gold certified building equipped with:
- Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS) capable of operating on 100% outdoor air
- Heat recovery heat wheels and heat pipes
- Chilled water & heated overhead radiant panels
- Dry cooler and mechanical screw chiller
- High efficiency condensing boilers
- Rainwater capture for flushing toilets & urinals
- Over 1.3 MWh solar generation system
- New Building Automation System (BAS)
Shift schedule: Will be Wed to Sun. 8am-4pm (Flexibility in shifts is required to cover for after hours events)
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain all building systems and equipment, including but not limited to HVAC,
plumbing, electrical, and life safety systems
- Perform general repairs and preventative maintenance with minimal supervision
- Assist with checking and maintaining chilled water and boiler water systems
- Minor electrical, plumbing, and painting & wall repairs
- Maintain outside grounds, including but not limited to lawn care, trees and shrubs. Also provide snow and ice removal as required
- Assist with minor construction projects
- Assist in Supervising contractors and service personnel
- Maintaining the building in “showroom” condition at all times
- Other duties as required and assigned.
Qualifications & Knowledge
- Certification in 5th Class Power Engineering or in the process of obtaining 5th Class Power Engineering within the next 12 months
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in building operations
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
- Previous experience with Building Automation Systems is considered an asset
- Intermediate level of Computer skills (Microsoft office, Email, etc.)
- Ability to shift work focus due to operational needs
- Strong skills with hand tools and power tools
- Strong Electrical, Drywall, Construction, Plumbing and Painting skills
- Woodworking skills
- Basic Landscaping and snow removal skills
- Solid work ethic and positive attitude
- Desire to work in a high-performing team with a continuous upgrading culture to achieve high impact results. Fluidity and a desire to work hard and grow are essential.
- A high degree of creativity with attention to detail
- Ability to maintain a clean work area and organize tools
- Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Willingness to learn and adapt to change
- Posses a valid Class 5 Drivers License
- Valid First-Aid certification considered an asset
- Experience operating a Skid Steer and Scissor Lift (MEWP) considered an asset
