About Us

The Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences (CNS) at Western's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry represents one of the most multi-disciplinary and highly collaborative groups in Canada. Our Department has a rich history of clinical investigation and is one of the few academic programs in North America in which neurology, neurosurgery, neuropathology, and neuroradiology form a tightly integrated academic program to provide advanced diagnostic and treatment options to patients with a wide range of neurological disorders. This integrated approach provides innovative treatments and offers the hope of a healthier lifestyle and improved outcomes to many patients.

The CNS Department is internationally recognized for leadership in stroke and cerebrovascular diseases, epilepsy, brain and spinal cord injury, spinal degeneration, tumours, and brain infections. The expertise of the faculty has been presented in numerous professional forums, which include over 1000 scientific publications, abstracts, and presentations at national and international meetings.

Our Department offers expert opinion and care for individuals referred to us by community physicians as well as neurologists and neurosurgeons from across Ontario and Canada. We are one of only two centres in Canada capable of treating complex epilepsy and we are one of only a few centers in Ontario involved with the care of complex Parkinson's disease, ALS, multiple sclerosis, and neuromuscular disease.

The Department offers a comprehensive neurosciences training experience to highly qualified candidates, which includes exposure to cutting-edge neuroscience and clinical medicine. The Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences at Western's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry is considered one of the best neuroscience programs in Canada.

Responsibilities

The Technical/Research Support 1 will be responsible for carrying out research functions in collaboration with principal investigators, staff, and students. The incumbent will maintain equipment, order supplies, set up and conduct tests and experiments in adherence with prescribed procedures. The incumbent will maintain records, and analyze,



summarize and compile data and results for dissemination.
We are seeking motivated Mechanical Engineering co-op students to join a biomedical engineering research lab focused on developing innovative technologies for neurosurgical applications. Students will gain hands-on experience in device prototyping, experimental testing, and interdisciplinary research.

Key Responsibilities:

- Assist in the design and prototyping of biomedical devices and systems
- Support experimental setup, testing, and data collection
- Conduct basic engineering analysis and document results
- Collaborate with graduate students and research staff
- Maintain lab equipment and follow safety protocols

Qualifications:

- Enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering program
Strong interest in biomedical engineering or medical devices
Basic CAD and/or programming skills (e.g., SolidWorks, MATLAB, Python) are an asset
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively

Education:

- Community College Diploma OR Undergraduate Degree in a related field

Experience:

- 1 year of work experience supporting research in a related technical field

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

- Familiarity with experimental design and analysis
- Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
- Ability to follow processes with high attention to detail
- Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
- Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
- Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
- Ability to collect and analyze data in an objective manner
- Demonstrated ability to understand and resolve issues
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
